What are some possibilities we have as a faculty
Think about an assessment that is coming up soon that you might replace with a more modern one
HOW DO WE REPLACE SOMETHING WE DO WITH SOMETHING BETTER?
- use for writing prompts
- example the word reptile – start to determine characteristics
- Stereotyping- put in words for Islam, Hinduism, Christianity- start to notice and articulate the commonalities and differences
- ****Wolframalpha.com- great for math!!!!- breaks down formulas and shows them in its various forms- all kinds of computational knowledge
- this will distort for statistics
- Gapminder- incredible- can employ all sorts of data
- Example- countries over time, watch for a jump or a drop in a country’s placement over time, go to Google timeline and look for the event(s),
- VLM Virtual Learning Magnets. We want the children to set up virtual learning experiences
- NESA- Virtual Science Fair
- A trailer for next years’ students- as opposed to summarize what you learned
- A screenplay as an alternative to personal narrative
- Instead of writing a report about Julius Caesar to a Facebook page- his social network that didn’t work out, key dates, writings, events- If we ask someone to write they will now have more to draw from as opposed to rote memorizing of form
- Sign language- to increase attention, the inherent value
- i.e., skype with students in China because we’re doing global
- Use actual chemical reactions to demonstrate to the class (Not dangerous)- a virtual chemistry class that does this might actually already exist
- A digital story with the narration as a personal narrative
- A tourist guide created in Google Maps with points of interest summaries written out
- Google Lit Trips for High School
- Student developed worldwide news service
- Ebooks – have kids create them and upload- upper grades for lower grades, the notion of digital story telling including imagery, as a way of rendering and sharing experiences
- Write the script as if you were in a museum wearing earphones- can be adapted to other situations
- Memoir in a science context, “memoir of me” – I started as a subterranean floor, “My sedimentary Life” (this is real cross curricular)
- A research project as a wiki
- Live binders- open source, allows one to store all kinds of information- good for kids to use to organize information
- Visual Thesaurus
- Vocabgrabber
- Students can create their own lists here
- Students own the learning
- Wordle- to create word clouds
- Instant Audience Feedback – a place to run polls with texting
