“Photo-Voice” Photographic Reporter

Photo Voice is a tool that can be used to gather qualitative data to ground purposeful stories. It is a process by which people can identify, record, and represent a situation and promote reflection and dialogue on the situation. We want to use Photo Voice to focus attention on the learning communities in which folks will be engaged.

Purpose and task

Your purpose will be to take photos that help to tell your truth of the development deeper learning communities (communities of practice) in the morning session. The actions you photograph should provide evidence of the development of a deeper learning community in your group. The overall story that will be presented at the end of the day will be a composite from all of the photographers. Given the mix of people taking pictures we expect to get good variation in the types of evidence presented.

Each person is asked to take 3-4 pictures. You want to provide more than one example of evidence of Learning Communities and most likely need more than one to contribute to the story. However, we don’t want you so involved in taking pictures that you are not involved in the activity. You may end up taking more than four but in the end choose three that you want to include. You are looking for meaningful evidence out of all the pictures you take.

Captions

You are asked to turn in your camera at lunchtime to Andrea. Please delete any photos from the camera that you do not wish to be included. Each photo you provide needs to be accompanied by a caption that completes this sentence: “The evidence of a Learning Community in this picture is ______.” The statement you write should be about 5 words or less. Be sure to put your name along with the photos and captions.

The photos will be played back at the end of the day with the captions with someone simply reading the captions for anyone who has trouble hearing. The voice might be part of the computerized slide show or someone with a good voice reading them. The story comes through the “poetry” of the captions.
