English 12 Honors Required Reading-Students will read one of the following novels:

A Separate Peace by John Knowles

Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift

Emma by Jane Austen

Mansfield Park by Jane Austen

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Dracula by Bram Stoker

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Assignment

v  Two, one-page responses are due the first day of school.

1. Choose one of the books from the list.

2. Divide your book in half, either by chapters or page numbers.

3. Halfway through reading the book, type a one-page, double-spaced response to the novel. A response will include perceptions, delights, and frustrations about the book thus far.

4. At the end of the book, type another one-page, double-spaced response about the book as a whole, judging it in light of all the other read works.

5. Type a proper heading (student name, assignment title, class title and teacher, and date) and staple papers together. Turn in the first day of school. Late work cannot be accepted.

v  Students will be asked to write a timed writing on various literary elements of their books during the first week of school.

Format

Responses should be typed in Times New Roman or Arial 12 point font with 1 inch margins on each side. Handwritten responses must be four pages (2 for each half of the book) in order to receive full credit.

Evaluation

The Summer Reading Assignment is a 100 point grade. The pages must be FULL to receive full credit.
