Introduction

This guide provides an overview of the rich andfascinating archive collections held at the Barking and Dagenham Archive and Local Studies Centre. It has been organised according to the type of record, e.g. parish records, local authority records, school records, church records, hospital records, business records, the records of charities, societies and clubs, family and personal papers, photographs, films and oral histories, and then within these sections collections have been listed alphabetically.

Parish records

Records of the Parish of Barking, 1558-1926

This collection comprises vestry minute books (1694-1926), baptism registers (1558-1812), burial registers (1652-1812), overseer’s accounts (1752-1927), churchwarden’s accounts (1777-1823), rate books (1723-1926), valuation lists (1842-1929), rental books (1763-1778), notice books (1769-1839) and apprenticeship books (1818-1844) of the Parish of Barking. Also includes the records of the Directors’ of the Poor (1855-1893), relating to the management of the Town Quay, as well as and the minute books and depositor’s books of the Barking District Savings Bank (1818-1852).

Vestry minute book of St. Mary’s Church, Ilford, 1831-1873

Manuscript vestry minute book of St. Mary’s Church, Illford (15 September 1831-9 January 1873), recording resolutions passed on the day to day management of the church and grounds, repairs and maintenance to the church building, the appointment of churchwardens, the churchwardens accounts and the collection of church rates. Also includes particularly interesting references to a dispute between the new vicar and parishioners, who called for a return to ‘the customary simple mode of performing divine worship’ (18 January 1844), providing an insight into popular perceptions of religious dissent among the clergy during the middle of the nineteenth century.

This collection comprises a staff register (1985-1934) and three patient registers (1898-1938) of Upney Isolation Hospital. Andrews Collection, 1925-2000

This collection comprises correspondence, leaflets and photograph albums, relating to Andrews Stores, situated at 445 and 450-452 Becontree Avenue, Dagenham (1925-1984), as well as the personal papers and family photographs of Norman W. Andrews, manager of the furniture department of Andrews Stores and the Joint Managing Director of N. W. Andrews & Co Ltd (1936-2000). Also together with a biography on the life and work of Norman W. Andrews, written as a research project by Elaine Noakes (2000).

This collection comprises a abstract title deed, with related plan, concerning buildings and land at St. Erkenwald Road, Barking (later known as Jacksons Builders Yard) between Henry Adair Rawlins and Daniel Thomas Jackson (1938), together with a family photograph (1901), as well as a further photograph, showing the Jackson Wharf at Barking Town Quay (circa. 1910-1930). Also includes letters and balance sheets, compiled by Phillip Jackson (1 February 1990-21 January 1993).

Also contains photographs, with annotations, showing male and female munitions workers on the factory floor and in the canteen at the works in Dagenham, as well as at the new Recretational Hall and a nurse at the onsite First Aid Hospital.
