The L.A. Prostate Cancer 5K Mission:
The L.A. Prostate Cancer 5K was created to increase awareness about prostate cancer,raise funds for both research and service projects for prostate cancer patients and families. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men aside from skin cancer. It affects more than two million men in the United States but due to the lack of knowledge and concern with the potential side effects, many men avoid treatment – despite effective available therapies. About one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. In 2013 more than 238,590 new cases of prostate cancer have been diagnosed, nearly 29,720 men have died, and over 2 million men are currently living with the disease.The 5K supports the growing need to promote research to further diagnosis and treat patients for prostate cancer. The proceeds raised through this event will be used for ongoing prostate cancer research taking place at the USC Institute of Urology and the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Hospital. Funds will help scientists and doctors create new therapies, develop better screening tools, and ultimately eradicate deaths from this disease. Furthermore, funds from previous years have already been used to create the “Life after Prostate Cancer” series of talks which have helped patients and their families cope with the disease.
USC Institute of Urology:
The USC Institute of Urology provides a complete range of sub-specialties which deliver comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for urologic disorders. The Institute is comprised of 20 full-time faculty and over 30 post-graduate residents and fellows, all committed to providing exceptional patient care in the Institute’s eight specialty centers.
USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Hospital:
The USC Norris Cancer Hospital is dedicated to the exclusive treatment of cancer patients and research. The Hospital is affiliated with the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center – one of the original eight comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute. The USC Institute of Urology’s physicians, post-graduate residents and fellows provide a complete range of specialty care to deliver comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for urologic disorders. The team of physicians is affiliated with The Doctors of USC and is faculty members of the renowned Keck School of Medicine of USC.

The event takes place during September, which coincides with National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. In the last 2 years, our event has been picked up by both local and national publications including the Daily News.
