M.I.T. Education Program (Scavenger Hunt?)

Objective: To educate MITs and Prospectives while having fun.

There will be 4 teams, each with 1/4th of the MITs and 1/4th of the 8th graders.

Items required for program: Colored paper, Glue, Scissors, Blindfold, Computer with internet access, Tape, name tags, Community Service activity, Kleenex, markers, rubber bands, paper plates, hole punch, stickers, yarn, air heads, ingredients for Challah, Black sharpie wax paper, 2 basketballs and lollipops.

All non MITs: You have all been assigned to run a station somewhere in the house. You will be given a stack of puzzle pieces, one for each team. They are all different colors. When you are told to do so, please go to your station and get ready. The teams will be one station apart at the beginning of the event in an attempt to space them out as best as possible. When a team reaches your station, please see below for how your station is to be run. Make sure that the team has the right clue for your station. If they don’t, maybe try to give them a hint in the right direction. Once you have given out all of your puzzle pieces, please go back to the basement. One more thing, I want you all to emphasize this if you see a team rushing through things. This is not a race!

Stations for non-MIT’s/explanations:

Start:

Items required: Name tags

This is where it all begins! This is going to be located in my basement, and it is where every team will begin.

Mixer: This is called “The Chain Game,” I stand at the front of the room and say, “My name is Danielle and I like… Harry Potter.” Then, if someone else in the room likes Harry Potter, they jump up and link arms with me. Then they say their name and something they like. The cycle continues until everyone is in the chain, then the first person and the last person have to find something in common in order to complete the chain.

We will make teams by having them get into 4 teams, (explained above)

Each team will get to pick a team color from the colors available (preset colors) and they will be given their first puzzle piece. Their puzzle piece will be a puzzle on one side, and on the back will have a clue glued to it. The clue will reveal the location of their next puzzle piece. They will then try to find that location in the house.

Station 1: I am where the cars spend the night, sneaking around here could be quite a fright.

15 minutes long

Items required: Blindfold, 2 Basketballs

You have been given the recreation station. You are in the garage, we will move the cars. Hopefully I warned you in advance and you are dressed warm, if not, let me know and I’m sure we have gloves and warm things that you can wear. You are going to be doing a few recreational esque games in the garage, if you don’t have a team at any time, you can probably temporarily step inside. Here are the games:

Select one player to wear a blindfold and they are to be placed into the center of the room. Once the player is blindfolded and in position, the other people must stand in one of the four corners. They must do this very quietly (no talking allowed) and within 10 seconds. The player that is blindfolded will point to one of the corners and all the players in that corner will be out of the game. If no one is in a selected corner, the players have 5 seconds to get to another corner before a new corner is selected. Once someone gets out, the players have 10 seconds to go to a new corner before another corner is selected. Maybe play this once or twice.

Next you will play lightning, an outdoor basketball game. I will have cleared the driveway ahead of time. How to play: The kids get into a line and the front two get the basketballs. The first person shoots from the grass, and they shoot until they score. The second person shoots after them, and also try to score. If the second person scores before the first person, then the first person is out. This continues until only one person remains.

Once they are done playing, find out what team color they are, and give them the corresponding team puzzle piece. Only give the team the puzzle piece corresponding with their color, all of the puzzles are different.

Station 2: I am in the lair of the twins, posters adorn the walls, an example is Pippin.

You will be located in the my bedroom, (2nd floor, turn right, first door on the left that isn’t the bathroom.) because you will be using my computer to show the video “The Tribe.” (Put video in full screen.) The video should be up on my screen already. After watching the video, you will lead the kids in a short discussion on their opinions. Here are some prompts you can use:

-Are you an American Jew, or a Jewish American and why do you feel that way?

-What does it mean to you to be a member of the Jewish tribe?

Once everyone has answered, ask what team color they are, and give them the puzzle piece that matches their color. Only give teams pieces that matches their team color. Every puzzle is different.

Once finished, find out what team color they are, and give them their corresponding puzzle piece. Do not give them any piece that isn’t their corresponding color, the puzzles are different.

Station 4: I am with our inspiration for RC, accompanied by two cages that are small and definitely not where I want to be.

15 minutes long

Items required: Community service materials

You have been given the community service / social action station. You are located in the living room (main floor, connected to the kitchen, has the rug peel back wall thing in it) You will be having a wrap party. Wrap the gifts for the children. Make sure to mention these gifts are going to kids with cancer.

While doing this, lead a discussion about our stand up cause, which is “Kids Kicking Cancer,” This is an organization that supports research for curing childhood cancer, and they keep the kids active and happy even when their lives are looking down.

Once completed, find out what team color they are and give them their corresponding clue. Do not give a clue that isn’t the team’s corresponding color. Each puzzle is different.

Station 5: I am where work gets done, peace and quiet reign, but we can still have fun. (Mom’s office)

15 minutes long

Items required: Tape

You have been given the sisterhood station. You are going to be located my mom’s office. (2nd floor, turn right, all the way down.) You will first talk about how in N’sheekot we are all sisters, and how we are part of a bigger organization (BBG), which is part of an even bigger organization (BBYO). Then you’ll play “Two Truths and A Lie,” one at a time, a girl will say three facts, two of them will be true and one will be a lie. It is up to you and the rest of the group to figure out what the lie is. You will then go into a team building game, which I will name, “The maze.” On the ground will be a 4 x 7 grid of tape (28 squares) There won’t be anything in the squares, it will just be sitting there. You will tell the team that there is only one way to cross the path. They can step one space in any direction, including diagonals. If they step on the wrong squares, they have to go back to the beginning. One more thing, once they start trying to cross the path, there is no more talking allowed. After about 5 minutes, tell them that they can have a couple minutes of time to discuss a plan. Once they have all gotten across the path, ask them what worked and what didn’t work as a team, and how they could have gotten across the path faster.

Find out what team color they are, and give them their corresponding puzzle piece. Do not give them any piece that isn’t their corresponding color, the puzzles are different.

Station 6: I am where meals are shared, everyone together, spreading their love and care.

15 minutes long

Items required: Kleenex, markers, rubber bands, paper plates, hole punch, stickers, yarn.

You have been given the creativity station. Really, this is the crafts station. You are going to be located in the dining room half of my kitchen. Here are your activities:

Title: Kleenex Ghosts

Instructions: Bunch up one Kleenex. Place it in the center of the second Kleenex and fold around the balled up one. Then use the elastic to hold the second Kleenex around the first making the ghost shape. Use the markers to decorate your ghost.

Title: Masks
Instructions: you cut eye holes in the paper plate then use a hole punch to punch holes in edge of paper plates on two sides then color it however you want it and put stickers on it then put string in holes and tie in knots. Then put on head

Once completed, find out what team color they are, and give them their corresponding puzzle piece. Do not give them any piece that isn’t their corresponding color, the puzzles are different.

Station 7: I am with the pots and pans, clinking and clanking with the bread-making man.

15 minutes long

Items required: Challah Ingredients, Wax Paper, Black Sharpie

You have been given the Challah making station. You are in the cooking section of the kitchen (go figure).

  • 3 and 3/4 tsp. of Yeast
  • 1/2 c. of warm water
  • 2 tsp. of sugar

Mix above ingredients and put aside to let the yeast bubble.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, place-

  • 3 c. of water
  • 4 eggs
  • 3/4 c. of oil
  • 1 and 1/2 c. of sugar
  • 2 tbl. of salt

Mix together and add the bubbling yeast.

Add 12-14 cups of flour (enough for it not to be very sticky), mix it well and let rise, about 1 to 1 and 1/2 hours. This all will be done by Julie and myself well in advance. You just need to dose out the dough.

Prior to shaping the challah, roll into long logs and coat with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar.

Please, if there are 20 people, cut the dough into 20 piece. 40 people, 40 pieces. Don’t forget to count the non-mits. If we run out of dough, I am going to be not happy with you, you have been warned.

Shape as desired- brush lightly with beaten egg.

Once the last group has shaped their dough, you are going to put in all of the challahs. Once cooked, everyone will come upstairs to eat them.

Once completed, find out what team color they are, and give them their corresponding puzzle piece. Do not give them any piece that isn’t their corresponding color, the puzzles are different.

Station 8: I am where there is glass on all sides; soon I will escape, far away to the outside.

15 minutes long

Items required: air heads, 2 bells

You have been given the board position education station. You are located in the Florida room (It is the room with all glass walls.) It might be a little cold, but we have a couple heaters we can plug in. This is not the most interesting station, you are mostly going over what each job on board covers. Here are the positions you should cover

N’siah (Ne-see-ah): President of the chapter. Is the delegator, the overseer of all activities. Makes executive decisions.

S’ganit (Sig-ah-neat): Vice president of programming. In charge of these three folds, sisterhood, recreation, and creativity. Plans function with other chapters, and ensures that we function using the folds.

Aym Ha-Chaverot(Aim-hah-ha-veh-wrote): Also known as MIT mom. This person is in charge of recruitment and MIT education.

Sh’licha (Sh-lee-hah): Vice president of community service, social action, and jewish heritage. This person is in charge of those three folds, and sets up programs that involve them.

Gisborit (gis-bore-eat): Treasurer. Your gisborit is in charge of the chapters funds, along with raising money for your stand up cause. (Kids kicking cancer)

Katvanit (cot-vah-neat): Note taker. This person takes notes during meetings and turns them in to the office.

Mazkirah (maz-key-rah): This person is the phone caller. There can be more than one of this person, and they remind people of meetings and functions.

Orechet (Or-reh-het): Newspaper person. This person is in charge of the RC newspaper, optional scrapbook, and the chapter website (yes we do have one!).

Madricha (Mah-drih-ha): Simply put, past president. Abbie will be this next year. A Madricha can still hold a different board position if they choose to.

Then you will play a game with two bells. I couldn’t find bells, so you are using two dog toys that I found at the dollar store. Two people sit in front of the toys, you describe a position, and they have to squeeze the toy first and give the correct answer (Hebrew names only). Give air head to right person, then two more people go.

Once completed, find out what team color they are, and give them their corresponding puzzle piece. Do not give them any piece that isn’t their corresponding color, the puzzles are different

To The Finish! I am where you once began, down in the bowels of this foreign land.

Items required: Lollipops

Once at the finish (which is really the starting point.) Teams will have to build their puzzle out of all the clues that they have received. The front will be a massive Hershey kiss or something… Every team that finishes will get a prize of some sort (probably Hershey kisses) Then we all go upstairs and eat our Challahs.

Afterward:

Dinner, Pizza?
