10 DAY 2

ReviewChallenge: When you jump off something high, you absorb some of the energy by bending your knees and back. That's what shock absorbers do: absorb the energy of an impact.
ASK: What materials absorb shock well? (soft, springy things, balloons, marshmallows, cotton balls, foam, packing material. Ask students to describe systems used in everyday life that absorb shock to keep people and things safe (airbags in cars/crumple zones, styrofoam packing materials for shipping, egg cartons, etc)

15 Tell students they will build their egg catcher and test it today. Students use designs from Day 1 to build. Students are given 4 pieces of white copy paper, scissors, and 25cm of tape.

30 Test time. Egg is dropped from 2meters. Egg is dropped through a pipe or large Christmas wrapping paper tube. Place a large plastic bag below the tube for easy clean up. Students can test with a pig-pong ball to be sure their catcher is lined up properly with the tube before dropping the egg on it.

35

40 Discuss what happened - What design features did successful landers have? Is an egg more likely to break if it is released from a greater height? Why? How does testing help you decide what changes to make to your lander? How would you improve the design of your egg catcher?
