Activity Overview: This game combines fitness and nutrition. Teams practice health-related fitness exercises to earn pieces of play food to create a healthy meal. Each member of the team creates their own version of a healthy meal by choosing food from each of the 5 food groups and matching the food to the appropriate place on their “MyPlate” placemat.
Equipment: Enough 3-D Plastic Food or Food Picture Cards for each student to have one piece from each of the 5 food groups (example: 24 students would need 24 pieces of fruit, 24 vegetables, 24 pieces of food from the grains group, 24 pieces of food from the protein group, 24 pieces of food from the dairy group), Class set ofPoly Circles, 6Fitness sequence cards, 1 MyPlate Placemat for each player, 6 hurdles, 6 yoga mats, 6 jump ropes
Set Up: Game is played in the Fitness Wheel format with 6 teams of 4-6 players sitting on their poly spot in lines facing outward from the center circle-forming what looks like the spokes of a bicycle wheel. Each team has 1 Fitness Sequence card, 1 yoga mat, 1 jump rope. Each player has one MyPlate placemat. The food is scattered in the center of the circle (wheel) and the hurdles are placed around the perimeter of the circle (wheel).
Procedures:
- The first player in each team line starts the game by following step one on the Fitness Sequence card (run counter clockwise around the circle leaping over each hurdle). As they return to their team line eachteam member will performstep one in turn. As each player returns to their team line, they retrieve one piece of food from the center circle and place it in the appropriate spot on hispersonal My Plate placemat.
- When playersstart their 2nd turn, each will repeat step one(run the hurdles) then perform step two on the Fitness Sequence card(perform 5 sit ups) before retrieving a piece of food.
- The game continues with each player adding the next exercise listed on the Fitness Sequence card to their exercise sequence on each turn before retrieving a piece of food for their plate.
- The game is over when each team member has completed the entire fitness sequence and has one piece of food from each of the 5 food groups represented in the correct position on their My Plate placemat.
Variations/Recommendations:
*Use pictures of food (pasted to card stock and laminated) if you don’t have plastic play food.
*Practice the fitness wheel and MyPlate relay asseparate games before combining them into one game.
*Allow players to retrieve 2 pieces of food on each turn, toss into a team pile and have team sort into food groups at the end of the game instead of creating a meal on MyPlate.
*Discuss the recommended numbers of servings for each food group per day. Have players retrieve 2 pieces of food on each turn and toss them into a team pile. At the end of the game have each team create one day’s worth of meals demonstrating the recommended servings of each food group per day.
