WEDGE TYPE CONNECTORS - TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Supply and installation of wedge type connectors on the overhead lines, for jumpers, cut-points, FTC, T connectors and substation equipment connections, as per the following Technical Specification.

CONSTRUCTION :

The connector should consist of a spring ductility and electrical conductivity. The “C” member and wedge should be factory contact surface during installation.

For the conductor size of ANT, GNAT, WEASEL and service connections (2.5, 4, 10 Sq. mm.) The universal Distribution connector (UDC) should be used. These connections with UDC are to be done by simple plier.

For the conductor size of diameter more than 10.05 mm such as RACOON, DOG, and PANTHER and above, AMPACT connector should be used.

AMPACT wedge connectors use a powder-activated cartridge for installation with the proper conductor combinations. During assembly, the wedge is inserted at a speed of about 40 m/s (130 ft/s) using the specified tool. High-speed insertion with the specified inhibitor is very effective in abrading all sliding surfaces and in disrupting surface oxide film to generate large numbers of contact spot in the electrical interfaces.

When connected, these taps will provide a reliable electrical and mechanical connection for solid, stranded, or compressed conductor combinations, including AAC, AAAC, and ACSR.

During Dis-assembly, A system of take-off clips is designed for use with the specified tool. Upon dis-assembly, the conductor as well as connector can be reused.

C MEMBER

C member is formed from extruded aluminum so that grain (extrusion direction) runs perpendicular to the conductors (e. g. from C groove end to C groove end). This orientation of grain direction provides for lower rates of stress relaxation in the metal. This maintains the level of contact pressure at or near he value at initial installation for the life of the connection. Susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking is also improved.

The material used is a specially designed version of AI 6061 (tighter tolerances on the chemical composition) to ensure consistency of the C member production regarding dimensions and mechanical properties.

WEDGE

The dimensions for the wedges are manufactured to close tolerances to ensure repeatability and reliability of the connection.

INHIBITOR

The chemical composition of the inhibitor is synthetic and compatible with he rubber gloves used by the utilities. This inhibitor contains special aluminum abrasive particles, optimized in size and quantity, to ensure repeatability and reliability of the electrical contact made in every connection.

TOOL

The tool is having 4 moving parts: the ram, the power unit, the breech cap and gas release knob. The gas produced by the cartridge during installation is captive inside the power unit. This allows the tool to remain self-supporting on the lines during installation until the gas release knob is turned counterclockwise. This allows the gas produced by the cartridge to be released and the tool to be removed. Tools are to be used on conductors above Rabbit only.

CARTRIDGE

Power charges repeatability (PCR) is critical to the supply of a reliable product, which can be applied safely and consistently every time. These cartridges are designed with the specified tool and to ensure that it can only be used with the specified tool and to be used on conductors above Rabbit only.

PRODUCT INDENTIFICATION

Each C member and wedge is marked with a distinct identification code. This identification code is also marked on the packaging to ensure that the correct parts are used for the application. The installer can make a quick visual before installing.

On each wedge the distinct identification code is located on the side of the largest radius groove to ensure consistent and error-free installation.

For substation equipments like Breaker, LA, Isolator and CT/PT, suitable 2 hole / 4 hole paddle as per the current rating to be used.

Tender will be issued to the manufacturer should gave minimum 5 years experience of supply and installation in.

Providing and fixing of wedge type Ampact connectors (made out of Aluminum alloy) to the overhead H. T. lines, Jumpers, cut points, DTC connection and L. T. connections in Wai Division.

The Ampact wedge connectors should consist of a spring type ‘C’ member and a wedge made of special Aluminium alloy of high ductility and electrical conductivity.

The Ampact wedge connectors use a powder activated cartridge for installation with the proper conductor combination. During assembly, the wedge is to be inserted at a speed of 40 m/s using the specified tools.

The connectors should be of ‘Tyco’ electronics or equivalent make.
