Student Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify countable and non-countable and singular and plural nouns by analyzing their use in a passage.

As assessed by: a test for which students are asked to identify and analyze the usage of countable and non-countable nouns and singular and plural nouns in a listening passage or reading passage from a magazine, newspaper, or textbook.

2. Compose a paragraph on a given topic exhibiting appropriate use of articles with count/non count nouns; proper nouns and noun phrases; singular and plural forms; and subject-verb agreement and determiner-noun agreement.

As assessed by: a writing assignment for which students must compose a paragraph on a given topic scored by a rubric for appropriate use of articles with count/non count nouns, proper nouns and noun phrases, singular and plural forms, subject-verb agreement, and determiner-noun agreement.

ESL16A supports Program SLO#1 in that the course helps students identify the noun/article system problems they have and teaches them strategies for correcting them.
Program Outcome #2: Students will obtain the linguistic knowledge and academic skills needed to communicate effectively in English.
As Assessed by: a questionnaire asking students to rank (1-5) their ability to: write clearly with confidence; speak clearly with confidence; read for main ideas; understand oral discussions and instructions
ESL16A supports Program SLO#2 in that it helps students learn the noun/article system and thus increases their ability to communicate effectively in English.
2. / Institutional Outcome #2 - Analytic & Communication Skills: obtain the knowledge and academic skills necessary to access, evaluate, and interpret ideas, images, and information critically in order to communicate effectively, reach conclusions, and solve problems.
ESL 16A supports Institutional Outcome #2 as it requires students to identify and analyze the usage of count and non-count nouns in reading and listening passages.
