(ACTUAL) FINAL (!) LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Newcomers,
I’m back! Due to popular demand (of Bill Anthony) here is my actual final letter; the last one may have been a rough draft? Since I really have nothing to say this time and my CASA supervisor won’t allow me to cut and paste our June court report, let me repeat what I wrote last month… and hope that none of you read? I thanked most members, and if I neglected to thank any of you personally last month, THANK YOU for July. Our new officers starting in September will be president Linda Andrew (author of 2014-15 newsletters) vice-president Jane Stange (author of 2015-16 newsletters) and newsletter consultants, secretary Sharon Littley and treasurer Nancy Wright.
Perhaps I should be grateful to Bill for this extra opportunity for a moment of peace and quiet. When our ten human house guests and one canine house guest heard I needed to work on my CASA report and president’s message today, for the first time in this very long week, everyone disappeared. It’s been an interesting challenge for our three bedroom/two and a half baths house. Fortunately, we do have a pool, a pond, four sofas and one aero bed. So if any of you feel lonely this 4th of July weekend, please contact me IMMEDIATELY.
Bill reassured me that I needn’t fret over this final last message-he could always fill in with a picture of an appropriate historical figure. I look forward to seeing just who Bill selects. In the meantime, I (still) look forward to seeing all of you at our July picnic on Sunday, July 13th and the first meeting in which I will not be president: Wednesday, September 3rd.
Happy 4th of July!

INTEREST GROUPS
Interest group participants must be members of Newcomers. To join an interest group, call or email the contact person.
Dining Out
Dining Out activities will resume again in the fall. As your facilitator, I look forward to communicating with you all again in September as we plan new and exciting opportunities to dine. I will once again be asking for volunteers to host so keep your eyes open for an interesting venue. Thanks to all members who have volunteered this past year and to all of you who participated and made this event so much fun this past year.

Fine Dining Group
Fine Dining takes a break during the summer months, but what a fun year we just completed in Fine Dining!!
Thirty-two Newcomers were active this year and that gave us four separate groups of eight for each gathering.
Our hosts came up with some wonderful varied menus ranging from Southern Favorites, Creole dishes, Italian feasts, Thai and even a Lobster Boil!
In September I'll be sending out a call for participants; our first gatherings will be in October/November.
Please consider joining the group! All are welcome.... no need to be a couple, a gourmet chef or have a castle! Our only requirement is to have a love of eating, trying new recipes, and socializing with friends over a delicious meal!

Wine Tasting Group
The Wine Tasting Group meets three times a year (March-April, June-July, and October-November) to taste wines. The group tastes a selection of six wines each time. The tastings are blind. They are usually, but not always, based on a single grape or region (e.g., Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Chianti).
For our June-July round, we are tasting Tuscan Reds. We are using Washington StreetPurveyors for this tasting.
If you would like to join the wine tasting group, send email to Jim Slack at .
Canasta
Canasta meets the fourth Tuesday of each month. Anyone interested in joining or being a sub, please contact Cynthia Tucker, 540-463-3344, or .
Fourth Thursday II Book Club
The purpose of this book club is to read and enjoy literature! Generally we keep on topic but also feel free to introduce relevant (or not so) to the discussion such as historical facts, bio details, book background, related authors or topics, and personal connections. Being able to disagree with something another member has stated is an important constant in our discussions. At times we may get off track but we always respect the authority of the moderator.
We usually meet at each other’s homes. The moderator is the person who chose the book.
Our book for June was Doc: A Novel by Mary Doria Russell with a copyright date of May 3, 2011. Like the 300+ people on Amazon that gave this book 4.75 stars, our members also enjoyed this novel and would agree with Kirkus, "Fact and mythmaking converge as Russell creates a Dodge City filled with nuggets of surprising history, a city so alive readers can smell the sawdust and hear the tinkling of saloon pianos...Filled with action and humor yet philosophically rich and deeply moving—a magnificent read."
When we meet in July we will dissect a Reginald Hill book: Dialogues of the Dead. This is the 19th adventure in a series by Hill, staring Superintendent Andrew "Fat Andy" Dalziel and Sergeant Peter Pascoe, law officers in Yorkshire, England. We were promised by our member that Hill’s writing is exquisite, humorous, and intelligent. It will make for an interesting discussion!
Contact person is JoAnn Toner

“This book is a pleasure to read and will make introverts and extroverts alike think twice about the best ways to be themselves and interact with differing
personality types.”
