Job Title: Assistant Warden

Job Purpose: To assist the Senior Residential Warden in ensuring the welfare and safety of residential students

Reports to: Senior Residential Warden

Grade/Salary: £7.50 per hour

Accommodation may be provided on the College Campus for the better performance of your duties

Hours: During Term-Time:

An average of 7 hours per week Monday – Sunday to include:

1.  1 night per week -6 ‘active hours’ – 5.30pm – 11.30pm;

2.  1 hour on-call Night Shift (between 11.30 pm – 8.30 am) for which you will be paid regardless of whether or not you are called out;

3.  One weekend per month by arrangement by rota. This requires you to provide a flexible commitment of 7 active hours each weekend day between 8.30 am and 11.30 pm.

Out of Term-Time:

There is an expectation that you will work up to 20 days during the College’s holiday periods. You will be paid at a flat rate (retainer) of £7.50 for one hour’s ‘on call’ shift, per day. You will be paid regardless of whether or not you are called out; for being on call.

Hours including substantive role:

Due to your existing full-time role and this Wardening role, you may, on occasion, be required to work in excess of 48-hours per week, and you hereby agree to waive the 48-hour week limit set out in the Working Time Regulations 1998. If you wish to withdraw your agreement to waive the 48-hour limit, you may do so at any time by giving 3 months’ notice in writing to the Corporation.

The College recommends that new staff join the DBS Update Service. This means that the DBS is ‘portable’ and can be accessed by employers (with your permission). It means that staff may only ever need to apply for one DBS check.

Upon appointment, subject to joining the Update Service, signing up to this job description confirms your agreement to the College accessing the DBS Update Service to undertake online status checks on your DBS Certificate in relation to your work at the College, at appointment and in the future.

Vision:

We are looking to recruit a pro-active and enthusiastic individual to assist the Senior Warden and team in looking after the welfare and safety of residential students on the Kingston Maurward campus. Duties will include both lone and team working and some administrative activities as required. You must have the ability to be reliable and responsive to alerts/emergencies and be committed to National Care Standards and the safety of young people.

This role may be suitable for a mature student.

Main Tasks and Duties:

·  Your first duty is to take pastoral responsibility for the students in your care.

·  To take active responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults in College.

·  To assist the Senior Residential Warden in operating the College’s student residential accommodation.

·  To staff the wardens’ office on a rota basis as the first line contact for students and to undertake administrative activities as required.

·  To assist the Senior Residential Warden in providing support to residential students and promoting the personal development, behaviour and welfare of residential students.

·  To ensure student compliance with the Residential Code of Conduct and Conditions of Occupancy.

·  To be a role model to students and RST staff in terms of professionalism and appropriate behaviour.

·  To establish appropriate professional relationships and boundaries with young people

·  To ensure students conform to the College’s codes of conduct, monitor and manage student behaviour to ensure the health and safety of all, particularly out of normal teaching hours.

·  To ensure all incidents involving students are documented, reported and actioned as appropriate, working closely with the Course Manager, Student Support and other staff.

·  To contribute to ensuring a reasonable standard of behaviour by students and cleanliness of rooms.

·  To be ‘on call’ as a member of the warden duty roster to respond to incidents connected with residential students. This is ONE duty night between 11.30 pm and 08:30 pm Monday to Thursday and one weekend in four. Weekend cover to be from 17:30 on Friday until 8.30am Monday.

·  To respond to fire/intruder alarms when on duty, in conjunction with the designated member of the Security team. To provide back up to Security staff as required, maintaining communication via the radio/pager system.

·  To undertake additional duties on the roster that may be required in the absence of the RSM.

·  To contribute to the organisation and delivery of social and leisure activities for residential students.

·  To maintain high quality notice boards and displays and keep students informed of events and matters of interest.

·  To promptly report maintenance problems, cleaning issues and student concerns as appropriate.

·  To be familiar with the current legislation and best practice relevant to the post.

·  To be actively involved in developing the residential accommodation service in line with the College commitment to continuous improvement.

·  To participate in special social and open day events at the College as required.

·  To actively liaise with other departments and members of staff to ensure full understanding of the interconnectedness of residential life and student achievement.

·  To take an active role in maintaining security on campus, particularly in and around student accommodation.

·  To use College systems and forms (ie registers, achievement and Promonitor) to ensure accurate records are maintained regarding learner attendance and progress.

Terms and Conditions:

·  This is a permanent appointment, subject to the postholder being appointed in another substantive role at the College.

·  The Contract of Employment will be based on the provisions of the Kingston Maurward Support Staff Contract.

·  The salary for this post will be £7.50 per hour.

·  During Term-Time, working Hours will be approximately 40 per month, to include overnight duties of up to 3 per week with flexibility to meet business needs. ‘On call’ duties will be paid at the rate of one hour per night in addition to the contracted active hours.

·  Out of Term-Time - There is an expectation that you will work up to 20 days during the College’s holiday periods on a rota basis. You will be paid at a flat rate (retainer) of £7.20 for one hour’s ‘on call’ shift, per day. You will be paid regardless of whether or not you are called out, for being on call.

·  The annual leave entitlement of 25 days per annum pro rata will be paid to you at 14.49% of each hour worked and is paid separately to you at college holiday times i.e. Christmas, Easter and Summer. Where you will be required to work a Bank Holiday or College closure day you will receive time off in lieu, subject to the agreement of the Residential Services Manager.

·  Annual Leave for all Wardens needs to be agreed with your substantive line manager and the Senior Residential Warden by October each year so that holiday rotas can be planned in advance.

·  The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a 6-month Probationary Period with reviews after 2, 4 and 6 months.

·  The notice period will be two months on either side.

·  Membership of the Local Government Salary Pension Scheme is available.

·  The successful candidate is required to advise whether they are aware of any health condition or disability which might impair their ability to effectively undertake the duties of the position as outlined above. This disclosure may result in a referral to the Occupational Health Advisor for a medical clearance prior to commencing employment.

·  If you do not achieve the required teaching qualification specified Level 3 4 5 award in Education and Training (if outlined in the Essential criteria of the Person Specification) within the allotted time then the post will not be continued.
