CPFTA Attendance, Grading, and withdrawal Policy for the 2016-2017 School Year

Schedule

CPFTA classes for the 2016-2017 school year will begin Tuesday, September 20, 2016 and conclude Wednesday, June __, 2017. Classes are held every Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM at either the Chicago Police Academy, 1300 West Jackson, or the Robert J. Quinn Fire Academy, 558 West DeKoven.

TeamBuilding Experiences

Team Building Field Experiences are geared to build self-confidence and camaraderie as well as promote cooperative learning in a diverse environment. Team Building Field Experiences are mandatory! Teambuilding activities may be any day of the week or on a non-class day, including Saturdays. Cadets must have a legitimate excuse (in writing and signed by parent/guardian) if they cannot participate. Cadets without a written excuse who refuse to participate will be considered for immediate removal from the Academy.

Grades

  • Cadets must maintain an overall high school 2.3 GPA (“C” average) per every 10 week marking period. Cadets must bring proof of tutoring/recovery in an attempt to bring up their failing grade(s).

Attendance

  • ALL CADETS MUST MEET THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF ATTENDANCE DAYS TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE AND PASS. Cadets must have 80% attendance to continue the program senior year.
  • All cadets must maintain a 80% attendance rate. Poor attendance will be factored into grade determination.
  • Unexcused absences will result in a phone call from the site coordinator.
  • 5 unexcused absences per semester will be considered for immediate removal from the CPFTA program and given an “F” for the semester.
  • Under Section 5/26-2a of the Illinois School Code and theChicago Board of Education Policy on Absence andTruancy, there are six valid reasons for a cadet’s absence:1. Student illness, 2. Death in the immediate family, 3. Observance of a religious holiday, 4. Family emergency, 5. Circumstances that cause reasonable concern to the parent or legal guardian for the safety of a child, 6. Other situations asdetermined or approved by the CPFTA Personnel such as tutoring or sports.
  • If absent, a cadet must prepare a to/from memo with the parent/legalguardian’ssignature acknowledging eachdate of absence. This note is required, even if the parent/guardian calls the Academy to inform CPFTA Personnel of the absence.
  • Cadets must sign in and sign out daily. Those who fail to do so will be considered absent. Junior cadets who receive an “F” will not be invited to continue in the program their senior year.

Withdrawal Process

  • Student must submit withdrawal form with parent/guardian’s signature to Site Coordinator within a week of student withdrawing.
  • Site Coordinator will call parent to verify withdrawal and send copy to cadets home, school, and student file.
  • Student sends withdrawal form to CPFTA program coordinator for signature.

Service Learning

All Cadets will maintain the needed service learning volunteer hours in accordance with the Chicago Public Schools Service Learning guidelines.
