Healthful Living Department Course Syllabus

Course Description:Welcome to Healthful Living! In this class, students will be provided the necessary resources and materials needed to develop a mastery of the skills and knowledge contained in the NC Standard Course of Study for Healthful LivingThis class is made up of 2 components; health and physical education.Students will work to meet each expectation and objective to earn a passing grade. Successful completion of this course is a graduation requirement.

Expectations for Achieving Success

To be successful in this class each student is expected to:

  1. Follow the rules and procedures of RHS and WCPSS.
  2. Be respectful to your teacher and all classmates.
  3. Stay on task and remain in designated areas.
  4. Bring required materials to class everyday.
  5. Complete all assignments as directed to the best of their ability and turn them in on time.
  6. Actively participate in class discussions and activities. Students are responsible for making up missed work. As per Wake County policy, the student has two days to complete their missed assignments for each day absent.

Grading

The quarter grades will be equally weighted at 40%. A comprehensive final project will be given at the end of the semester, weighing 20% of the semester grade.Parents and students are encouraged to check their grades on PowerSchool. Grades will be updated weekly. Interims will be given every three weeks.

Grading will be determined on a weekly basis. Points will be assigned accordingly to daily class work, class participation/discussions, quizzes, group work, in-class activities, projects, health notebook and tests.Please check the schedule for assignment and test dates.

Health

The Health portion is designed to give the student a broad view of what it takes to have a healthy life. It combines issues of social, emotional, and mental health. The importance of physical fitness, nutrition, and weight control is discussed. Abstinence until marriage is stressed as well as the dangers of using alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Students are given tools to make healthy decisions, resist peer pressure, and much more.

Physical Education

The Physical Education component will expose students to fitness testing and conditioning (i.e. mile run, cardiovascular exercise) team sports (i.e. volleyball and basketball), as well as individual/lifetime sports (i.e. tennis, table tennis). This course includes history, rules, and terminology of the different sports activities. Emphasis will be placed on participation, skill development, proper etiquette/sportsmanship, and safety.

Expectations:

  1. Students have 7 minutes from the time the bell rings to get dressed and report to their squad lines. If they are not in their squad lines at that time 3 points will be deducted from their daily grade.
  2. Students should dress-out everyday! If a student has a medical reason for not participating in class, a note from the doctor will be required. Female students will not be excused from participation due to menstrual cramps.
  3. Students are expected to participate in all activities! Alternate assignments will be given to students who can’t participate (walking laps the entire period).
  4. Secure personal belongings in the locker room with a lock (we are not responsible for stolen items).
  5. Follow established rules regarding food/drink, hats/headgear, and electronic devices/cell phones.
  6. Do not abuse school equipment

Absences

Actively participating in Physical Education class is essential! Students who miss a day of P.E. class for any reason (present but not feeling well enough to participate, excused/unexcused absence, ISS, CLC, OSS, etc.) will not receive credit for participating that day. To make up participation credit, the student will have to see their teacher to complete an assignment given by your teacher. All activities must be made up by the end of the quarter

Grading

A weekly grade will be given and posted to PowerSchool. Students may earn 100 points per week, which is equivalent to 20 points per day. The points system is as follows:

5 pts – dressing out, 5 pts – exercise and fitness (warm-up, stretching, etc.), 10 pts – participation, (total grade of 12 pts if you dress-out and walk; please know that if this is all you do, then you will fail the PE portion)

Materials Needed For PE Class:

  • Students must wear appropriate apparel (tee-shirt, shorts, sweatshirts or sweatpants, warm-up, and light jacket if needed). T-shirt colors of white, gray, or any RHS apparel is appropriate.
  • Tank tops, spaghetti tops, cheer shorts, and inappropriate t-shirts will not be permitted
  • Athletic shoes must be worn at all times during class. Sandals, flip-flops, or boots cannot be worn during class!
