Directed:  the evaluation of the North Carolina Comprehensive Stroke Center Program;  the combined data analysis of the three Federally funded Comprehensive Stroke Center Programs in North Carolina, Oregon, and New York;  the preparation of a bibliography and resource document on health education materials produced and used in water and sanitation projects in developing countries;  the development of an information system for the U.S.A.I.D. Health Sector Loans in the Dominican Republic including participating in the design of an impact evaluation for the Health Sector Loans, and a demonstration of the utility of microcomputers in managing the Health Sector Loans;  a study to provide baseline measures for assessing the effects of the new medical school and hospital at Stony Brook, New York, funded by New York State; and  a feasibility study for the development of a comprehensive stroke center for North Carolina with the North Carolina Heart Association under contract to NINDCS.  Other international work included serving as coauthor on a report on the review by an expert panel of the Food Wastage/Sanitation Cost Benefit Methodology project in Guatemala for the Office of Health in U.S.A.I.D.

Staffed:  a study to assess acute care bed needs in a one-county urban area in North Carolina;  a Targeted Study of Catastrophic Illness Addressing Spinal Injury for the National Center for Health Services Research (NCHSR);  the medical Provider Survey of the National Medical Care Expenditure Study (NMCES) funded by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the NCHSR;  a mail survey of youth services provided by grantees of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA);  a study on the effects of multiple drug use among alcoholic persons for NIAAA; development of a self-evaluation manual for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA);  grant directories for NIAAA; national survey of the context of drinking for NIAAA;  prepared a report on the current status of minorities in the allied health professions in the southeast area of the U.S. for the Bureau of Health Research and Development(BHRD); and  participated as a member of evaluation teams assessing the organizational and operational effectiveness of alcoholism treatment centers.

1971-1973. Mental Hygiene/Social Work Specialist, McAfee Army Hospital, WSMR, New Mexico, 88002.

Administered psychological tests and treatments for adult, child, and adolescent persons;  maintained treatment records;  conducted classes in drug abuse, treated drug dependent patients;  coordinated referrals and follow-ups to the halfway house at Ft. Bliss;  developed prevention programs for the Army's drug treatment program;  supervised medication of patients requiring chemotherapy;  designed research programs and collected data;  treated alcoholic patients, conducted classes, and conducted follow-ups in the Army's alcohol program; and  assisted in the coordination of social work programs.

1968-1970. Peace Corps Volunteer, Tarija, Bolivia, Peace Corps, Washington, D.C.

Worked on the design, implementation, and record keeping for a Tuberculosis Control Program in Southern Bolivia;  designed and implemented various community development programs, including Project Heifer, in a large rural area;  trained Bolivian Nationals to continue the TB control work;  served as liaison with various community development agencies;  obtained school-to-school funds;  assisted the local Community Development Worker in the organization of agricultural cooperatives; and  assisted in the development of sanitary posts in various localities.

1967-1968. Graduate Research Assistant, Psychology Department, University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma.

Participated in the design, literature search, gathering of data, and statistical analysis of three research projects in verbal learning; and  assisted in the grading and record keeping for two undergraduate classes in Psychology.
