Attitude

How can one develop a proper attitude toward God? First, our attitude toward God must be based on our conviction that “He is,” and that “He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). This kind of faith will produce a good attitude of godly fear, and “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7). Second, God is absolutely holy, absolutely perfect, and absolutely wise. He is grieved by evil. He loves man and wants us to love and obey Him. All of this should motivate us to want to be true to Him all the days of our life. Our attitude toward God will then be such as expressed by the heavenly hosts: “Worthy are thou, our Lord and our God, to receive the glory and the honor and the power: for thou didst create all things, and because of thy will they were, and were created,” (Revelation 4:11).

The churches of Christ greet you.

Romans 16:16

PARABLE OF THE DOLPHINS

Tina was a surfer in California. Her whole life centered upon going to the ocean, each day, in order to ride the waves. She really enjoyed surfing.

On one particular day, as usual, Tina went to the ocean and paddled her surfboard just beyond the place where the waves were breaking. There, she saw a school of dolphins joyfully playing in the waves. She said to herself, “Waves and dolphins ~ it doesn’t get any better than this!” Tina turned around to face the shore as she mounted her surfboard. All of a sudden a great white shark surfaced from the depths of the ocean and lunged at Tina; knocking her off of her board. Tina was absolutely terrified. She quickly scrambled to get back on her board so she could get to the shore.

Next, the great white came up behind Tina and attacked her on her back. He knocked her into the water again. Tina knew she was hurt because the shark’s razor-like teeth had torn deeply into her flesh and the ocean-water was turning blood-red. Tina screamed for help. She looked all around to see if the shark would return a third time to “finish her off.” Then, Tina saw a school of dolphin frantically swimming toward her. Apparently, the dolphins knew of the danger that Tina was in and swam to form a “dolphin circle” of protection around her. Finally, the shark, not wanting to take on all the dolphins, left the area; swimming away through the pool of Tina’s blood.

Tina made it to shore. She was transported to the hospital where she received 550 stitches and more than 200 staples; all these were necessary just to close up the wounds to her back. What a story! But how does this true story become a parable?

Consider that the dolphins were joyfully living their lives in their own little world. All of a sudden they were made aware that Tina was in danger of losing her life if “someone” did not intervene. They could have said to themselves something like, “I don’t want to get involved” or “She knew the danger of riding a surfboard in the ocean ~ let her suffer the consequences.” Nevertheless, the dolphins joined together to save a life that was in peril!

Often we are made aware that a brother/sister in Christ may be living a life where they have put their own soul in jeopardy (Isa. 59:1-2; Mark 8:36). It may be they have become careless in their attendance to Bible Study and/or worship (2 Tim. 2:15; John 4:21-24); they may be going to places that are full of sin (1 Pet. 4:4); they may be corrupting their manner of speech by saying that which is offensive to God (Matt. 15:11); or, maybe they have even completely left the church of our Lord (2 Pet. 2:20-22). Without a doubt their soul is in danger!

Satan is actively attacking this brother/sister (Mark 4:15). Maybe at first it was a hard nudge that caused our brother/sister to fall off their way and back into the world. But there is one thing you know: the attack is not over with a nudge. The attack will not be over until Satan gets his teeth into the life of the Christian and ultimately devours him or her (1Pet. 5:8-9). Satan will return as many times as necessary until the Christian is finally “finished off “(Luke 4:13).

But, what about us ~ the dolphins? When we come to the knowledge that a brother or sister is in danger of being subject to the jaws of Satan, we need to rally around this Christian while they are fighting for their spiritual lives (Heb. 12:1-2) and form a circle of love (Luke 10:27; Rom. 12:10) and protection (1Cor. 13:8, Eph. 6:11-13) around them (Gal. 6:1-2).

Don’t let Satan come in, time and time again, and finally kill our brother/sister before our very eyes (2 Tim. 4:10; Heb. 3:13; 2 Pet. 2:20-22). Talk with your erring Christian brother or sister and share the saving words of Jesus with the one who needs them (John 6:68).
