Gifts for the Congregation
Let the people offer prayer upon entering their pews, kneeling or bowing down.
In the Lord’s Name we greet you, praying that the Holy Spirit would bless your hearing of God’s Word with a lively trust in Him who died and rose for you, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Use the time prior to the service for silent preparation for worship.
Visitors, consider prayerfully Trinity’s Confession of the Lord’s Supper on the pink bulletin insert.
See front inside cover of LSB for prayers before and after the service, and before and after receiving the Sacrament.
For self-examination before the service, consider the Christian Questions, pages 329, 330 in LSB.
Prepare for the Liturgy by marking the pages and the hymns, reviewing the order of Service, and praying the Collect for the Day.
Please leave a record of your visit either in our guest book near the main door or on the guest side of the pink slip in your service folder.
Service Notes
The coming of the Messianic kingdom means the restoration of creation. A sign of this restoration is “the mountains shall drip with sweet wine” (Amos 9:11–15). When the elements of a fallen creation fail expectations at a wedding feast, our Lord Jesus restores creation, making it abound with an abundance of the very best wine (John 2:1–11). With this sign Christ manifests His glory; the “back” of God (Exodus 33:12–23) is revealed to those who believe. The hour will come when Jesus will again manifest His glory by taking the curse on creation into His own body to release us from its power. Through this recreating love of Christ we are enabled to “be kindly affectionate to one another, . . . in honor giving preference to one another” (Romans 12:6–16).
Green, denoting growth in Christ, is the color for the season of Epiphany.
Language of the Faith
God the Father. The first Person of the Holy Trinity, to whom the Scriptures ascribe the work of creation, whose nature is love, and who, together with the Son and the Holy Spirit, is one God, almighty and eternal.

Service of the Word
Introit, Psalm 66
For His glorious deeds of salvation and steadfast love God is worshipped by the saints in heaven and on earth.
All the earth worships You and sings praises to You; they sing praises to Your name. It is good to give thanks to the Lord. To sing praises to Your name, O Most High. Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of His name; give to Him glorious praise! Say to God, “How awesome are Your deeds! So great is Your power that Your enemies come cringing to You. All the earth worships You and sings praises to you.” Come and see what God has done: He is awesome in His deeds toward the children of man. Blessed be God, because He has not rejected my prayer or removed His steadfast love from me!

The Church prays for peace.
Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and earth, mercifully hear the prayers of Your people and grant us Your peace through all our days; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Old Testament Reading, Exodus 33:12-23
Before the fulfillment of God’s promises in Christ, Moses, as a servant in God’s house, would only see the backside of God’s glory, lest he perish. Moses’ prayer is answered, in a sense, when he sees the full revelation of the Lord’s glory in the Christ, the Son over the house of God.
12Moses said to the Lord, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.’ 13Now therefore, if I have found favor in Your sight, please show me now Your ways, that I may know You in order to find favor in Your sight. Consider too that this nation is Your people.”
14And He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
15And he said to Him, “If Your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. 16For how shall it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not in Your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and Your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?”
17And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in My sight, and I know you by name.”
18Moses said, “Please show me Your glory.”
19And He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you My name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20But,” He said,
“you cannot see My face, for man shall not see Me and live.” 21And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by Me where you shall stand on the rock, 22and while My glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with My hand until I have passed by. 23Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back, but My face shall not be seen.”
Gradual, Psalm 107
For God’s incarnate Love, Jesus, and our deliverance from death all men are to praise Him.
He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. Let them thank the Lord for His steadfast love, for His wondrous works to the children of men!
Epistle, Romans 12:6-16
Paul reminds us that our various talents and abilities are gifts from God. As such, the Love of God should motivate their usage.
6Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
9Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. 14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be conceited.
Alleluia & Verse, Psalm 148 page 190
Superior to Moses, more excellent than the angels is the Lord Jesus whom all the heavenly host adore.
Praise Him, all His angels; praise Him, all His hosts!
Holy Gospel, John 2:1-11
This sign shows that the time of grace predicted by the prophets is now here: the Lord of gladness manifests His glory in His first sign. Yet His final glory is to come—His sacrifice on the cross—that is why He said, “My hour has not yet come.”
1On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus also was invited to the wedding with His disciples. 3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
4And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.”
5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”
6Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8And He said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.
9When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”
11This, the first of His signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested His glory. And His disciples believed in Him. (ESV)

The Church praises the Father who reveals His glory in His Son, who bestows forgiveness in His body and blood.
For what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory.

God’s Stewards. The Christian way of life is spontaneous and voluntary (1 Corinthians 16:1,2; 2 Corinthians 9:7)—it is not moved by remorse, goaded by guilt, forced by fear, or formed by fear. Christian stewardship is the life of Christ manifest within His people—thus we recognize need and take steps to remedy the want. Christians are sometimes called upon to leave their own and at other times to surrender their property (Matthew 19:29). The freedom to decide what might be done to minister to a given need is a facet of the life of faith; pray, then, for wisdom to act in accord with the charity that God has shown to us in Christ.
Missions. Trinity is linked to Macau, where long-term missionary David Pfeifer serves. He writes, "During our Tuesday night Bible study, we are in the lessons leading up to the birth of Jesus. The other week, one student, Kelly, brought the lesson along to our lunch time with questions. As we talked, she asked, 'Why did Jesus have to die?' It gave me an opportunity to share the Gospel with her. She said she never heard that before. This girl was familiar with the English Center, but never came until we started the special brown bag lunch sessions from Tuesday to Friday, during which students can practice with native English speakers. As her English improved, she started coming to Tuesday night class as well. Keep her in your prayers, so that she will continue to ask questions and that the little seed may grow."
Hotel de Zink. Trinity sponsors InnVision/Urban Ministry’s shelter for up to 15 people who are homeless during the month of January. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are needed to feed them during their stay with us. Socks & travel size Toiletries are also needed.
The Altar Guild thanks all who assisted in the decoration of the church building for the Season of Christmas and the members extend also their thanks to those—from the greatest to the least—who helped removing the trees, packing the crèche, and cleaning the building.
