Letter and Sound of the Week: Cc – Callie Cat

Themes of the Week: Thanksgiving and Friends

Words of the Week: no, not

Dear Kindergarten Families:

Tuesday will mark our 50th day of school, halfway to our 100th Day celebration! This year we will have some fun celebrating in 1950’s style – vinyl records, rockin’ round the clock, and watching a Mighty Mouse cartoon (not Mickey)! We encourage the kids to dress in 1950’s style, like us teachers! i.e. - Boys – rolled up jeans, white t-shirt, slicked hair; Girls – Capri jeans/pants, sweater, poodle skirt, bobby socks, hair in high pony, etc.

I am also looking forward talking with parents at conferences this week (no children at kindergarten conferences if at all possible please).

Language Arts: This week we will practice beginning hard /c/ sounds like in the word “cat.” We are making words that rhyme with “at” and practicing the short /a/ sound as in cat.

Letters to review at home: Ss, Mm, Rr, Tt, Bb, Nn, Hh, Vv, Aa, Cc

Sight Words: I, see, am, a, the, by, my, like, to, can, go, an, and, we, look, no, not

“Juicy” vocabulary from Making Meaning book, Pumpkin, Pumpkin: observe, enormous, patient, scoop

Reading Workshop: We are learning to talk about books with a partner to gain more meaning, and we practiced retelling a familiar story in our own words by looking at the pictures if we couldn’t read the words. We also practice predicting what’s going to happen next. These activities are good skill-builders you can do at home when reading with your child.

Math: As we continue counting by ones, twos, fives, and tens, we are also finding missing numbers. Our goal is that the students are very familiar with the numbers 1 through 10 (counting, grouping, identifying and writing). If your child is having trouble with those numbers, please support him/her at home by practicing those skills, because our next focus will be to explore the numbers 11-20 (the most difficult).

Science: We wrapped up our Properties Unit by comparing materials and grouping them into “plastic, wood, metal, and more than one material.” We often play “Guess My Property,” as I group children by different clothing, hair color, eye color, letters in their name etc., and they have to guess what is similar about the way I chose them. They enjoy thinking and guessing!

Social Studies: In November and December, we will learn about how people from different countries and within our own country celebrate different holidays. We will talk about Thanksgiving, Kwanzaa, Hannukah, St. Nicholas Day, and Christmas. Our kindergarteners will celebrate Holidays Around the World this year on Thursday, Dec. 22. Watch for more information after the Thanksgiving holiday about how to help with our rotating party! Does your family celebrate any special holidays or have traditions that you’d like to share? Drop me a note or email!
