Short video baseball fundamental analysis (2013)
· Below are some great youtube videos on hitting mechanics. Though some are sponsored by certain companies, I like their breakdown. Most are nice and short. If you pause at key points in the swing, you can see that, in the words of the great hitting coach Charley Lau, “all great hitters come to the same points at critical points.” Look for the LHS hitting emphasis of : STANCE – LOAD – PIVOT – EXPLODE

· This is an excellent video on CONTACT POINTS! In the first minute, the coach talks about “tee placement.” Essentially, he’s talking about the hitter’s ideal contact points. We have focused on this with the younger kids recently. Once in season, I’m going to emphasize this with our high school kids as well. Use these points at open gyms or ask me about them. This new focus of slowing the swing down to understand contact points (inside, middle, outside) has been emphasized at all eight hitting clinic sessions I attended this winter (at ABCA, WBCA, and our Clutch Performance Clinic at LHS). The coach also talks about ball placement, setting the ball on the tee the same each time to hit the inside of the ball. Great breakdown! 2 minutes 10 seconds

· This instructional video emphasizes keeping your hands inside the baseball. Great demo on identifying specific points of bat path. 3 minutes 42 seconds

· Put together by Insider Bat, this video gives an example of “target practice.” Keep in mind he is using softer balls or pickle balls for the drill. Instead of moving the target, keep the target in the same place and move relative to home plate what an inside or outside pitch would be. Essentially, you are working on CONTACT POINTS (where you hit the inside, outside, or middle pitches). 1 minute 30 seconds

· This video shows drills and features from the Insider Bat that we use at open hits. I like the bat because it really focuses on proper upper body mechanics. The segments of the video also emphasize the proper mechanics, even if you don’t own one of these bats. First five minutes are the drills. The rest is advertisement for their products. I’m not necessarily promoting product, just the drills. 6 minutes 23 seconds

· This video simply talks about gripping a bat. 1 minute 6 seconds

· Yankee hitting instructor Kevin Long works with Alex Rodriguez on front flips. I like that he points out where Rodriguez’s feet are relative to a line (to make sure he’s consistent in his step on every swing). Note his consistency with inside and outside pitches. Also points out balance throughout the swing and fundamentals from the ground up. 2 minutes 26 seconds

· Though somewhat academic, I like the checklist of the key points for hitting mechanics. 2 min. 29 seconds

· Ryan Braun hitting mechanics. Pause at key points of his swing and you see perfect mechanics. 27 seconds

· Joe Mauer’s swing. Great opportunity to see one of the sweetest, most efficient swings in the game in normal time and slow motion (at the same time). If you pause the slow motion video at exactly 10 seconds, you see Mauer stacked perfectly at contact with back foot kicking toe (laces) facing the pitcher. 20 seconds

· Albert Pujols is featured as the coach analyzes his swing. It’s a great breakdown of his mechanics! His and Mauer’s are two of the most efficient swings in baseball in that they transfer their energy from the ground up with no wasted motion. At a recent coaches clinic, I heard two professional hitting coaches talk about SLOW FEET, FAST HANDS, AND QUIET HEAD. Watch Pujols in these regards – very efficient. 4 minutes 50 seconds
