Topic / Research / Poster/slide show / Model/art/display
Safety/Earthquake preparedness / What is needed during a disaster. Safety steps to take.
Details on how/why articles are important, etc. / Details how to put together an emergency box that clearly shows the importance of the box and the steps to being prepared and safe during an earthquake. Should be organized and informative. Be creative. / - put together an emergency box with all articles
-create an emergency plan for your family
Engineering for Earthquakes / Find out what is currently being done to create structures that are more resistant to damage from earthquakes.
What countries are the forerunners in this technology? / Display important information gathered during research. Should be organized and informative. Be creative. / -build a working model that shows how different structures react during an earthquakes
-demonstrate how different braces work in different ways
Causes of Earthquakes / What happens within our earth to cause an earthquake? / Display important information gathered during research. Should be organized and informative. Be creative. / -build a plate tectonic display that shows what happens during an earthquake
- use a 3D map to show the movement directions of the major plates and how that movement affects earthquakes
Anatomy of Earthquakes / What are the components of an earthquake? How many different seismic ways are there? how are they different? / Display important information gathered during research. Should be organized and informative. Be creative. / - build a model that demonstrates the different seismic wave movement
-show the waves and where they are found and the direction they move in relationship to the plate movement
History of measuring Earthquakes / Determine how earthquakes have been measured and the history behind each type of measurement. Which measurements are best? Most accurate? When they should be used. / Display important information gathered during research. Should be organized and informative. Be creative. / - make a model of a seismograph
- show a seismograph and explain the difference from a seismograph
Major California Earthquakes
(2 groups working on different earthquakes) / Gather details on at least 3 major California earthquakes. Compare them, determine the plate movements, intensity, consequences, etc. / Display important information gathered during research. Should be organized and informative. Be creative. / -location map
-3D model
-pictures of disaster area
Hazards of Earthquakes / Gather details on the hazards that are caused by earthquakes. / Display important information gathered during research. Should be organized and informative. Be creative. / -model
-detailed drawings
-3D model
Where do most Earthquakes happen and why / Gather details on current earthquake activity. Track for several days making a detailed map of occurrences. / Display important information gathered during research. Should be organized and informative. Be creative. / -map showing seismic activity
-detailed drawings
Fault lines of California / Use reference materials to locate all known fault lines in California. What caused these and how active are they? / Display important information gathered during research. Should be organized and informative. Be creative. / -map
-detailed drawings

Earthquake Project

Who: Working in groups of 2-3

What: Randomly chosen topic from below.

Each project must include:

Research, informational poster/slide show, and model/art work/pictures/display

Time: Presentation of at least 5 minutes

Where: Both in class and at home as necessary

When: To be completed over the course of 3 weeks (about 2 weeks for project and 1 week to prep for presentation)

Why: To develop an understanding of earthquakes: their anatomy, location, history and causes, hazards associated with earthquakes, and our efforts to provide safety during them.

My project topic is: ______

My team includes: ______
