Job description: Chef d’Equipe

Term of Office: Annual appointment by WET Committee

Main duties:

The Chef d’Equipe is responsible to WET for the selection, leadership and management of the team, reserves, crews and other team personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend WET committee meetings
  • Select the team after consultation with representatives of each of the four Welsh EGB groups..
  • Attend viewing/selection rides and liaising with group representatives and secretary to be abreast of potential members’ performance
  • Act as a member of the WET Committee
  • Attend, as necessary, meeting with the Chef d’Equipes of the other Home nations relating to planning forthcoming competitions or alterations to the structure or rules of these competitions and to negotiate any rule changes relating to these competitions as instructed by WET, notes/outcomes to be reported to WET within 3 weeks of meetings taking place
  • Establishes and maintains on-going personal contact with all members of the tem long and short list as soon as selected, providing advice and assistance, as appropriate.
  • Maintain awareness of the rules governing international competitions and any rule changes or proposed rule changes
  • Represent the interests of team members during their participation in international competitions, including during any disputes or appeal processes.
  • Represent and act on behalf of WET during any meeting occurring during competitions that concern the running of the competition or any ad-hoc amendments to the structure or rules of the competition
  • Monitor any medication in use
  • In consultation with the Vet (if one is appointed), make any last minute changes in which combinations shall ride as the team on the day before/ of the competition. After consultation with Riders, instructs team and individuals on ride tactics.
  • Agrees with the Team personnel on their tasks and may recommend a horse exercise programme whenever a Team is assembled in connection with a competition.
  • Is present at the competition ride for the entire day, marshals all available resources, acts as a focal point for communication, and provides leadership.
  • Communicates status and results on the day of the ride to the Chair of WET (or their nominated delegate).
  • Within two weeks of the competition, provide a written report to the Chair on the competition and any lessons learned.
  • From the moment a Team assembles to travel to a competition, with the exception of veterinary matters, the Chef d’Equipe has absolute authority for all aspects of the team's participation.
  • The Chef d’Equipe may delegate responsibilities [ e.g. appoint Assistant Chef d’Equipe but remains responsible for ensuring that the responsibilities are carried out.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • International or relevant competition experience as team member, official or crew
  • Highly experienced in horsemanship in endurance riding
  • Excellent organisational, leadership and communication skills
  • Understanding and use of IT

The WET committee will provide support to the chef and at least one member of the WET committee will support the Chef d’Equipe on the day/days leading up to & including the day/days of competition

This is an honorary position but reasonable expenses may be met from the agreed budget
