Module One : Why undertake the EPQ ?
This module offers background reading and opportunities for reflection about the provision of desirable criteria for university by your own institution. Will the EPQ help your students progress to Higher Education and employment?
Module Two : What does EPQ entail and what role do staff play?
This module looks at the structure of the Extended Project Qualification and the rationale behind the required elements. It looks at the role of the Centre Administrator, the Supervisor and others that may be involved on the periphery giving support. On completion, you will have an overview of the EPQ process and be able to see how your role as librarian may find a niche, supporting students and staff or to consider becoming a Supervisor.
Module Three : Time Management, Choosing a Topic and the Production Log
This Module looks at three main elements of the EPQ qualification. It is more practical in nature than the previous Modules. By the end of this Module you will understand the reasons why some students may have time management issues and how you can help resolve them, be more familiar with the Production Log and feel confident to have input on their choice of topic.
Module Four: Assessment and mark scheme for EPQ
This Module will focus on the in depth Assessment criteria used by the AQA Examination Board in marking the EPQ. The mark schemes for other accrediting bodies are very similar but you should check the websites to be sure of details. At the end of this Module you will understand how to tailor your support to give students the best chance of a high grade.
Module Five: Research, Resources and the Taught Element
This Module concentrates on the support a librarian can give EPQ students to help them with research and selection of resources and investigates how these aspects might be embedded in the Taught Element of the syllabus. On completing this Module you will have explored a wealth of available information that can help you develop lesson plans for EPQ support. This is a double length Module – take a break half way through!
Module Six: Presentation and the Written Report
This final Module considers the third Assessed element of the EPQ. This is the Presentation. The Presentation comprises an interactive talk. This Module will cover choosing an appropriate format for the live talk and presentation skills. Module Six also covers writing a report in an academic style. This may comprise the whole Product or may be an adjunct to the Product. As such, this too is an Assessed element of the EPQ. On completion of this Module you will understand the importance of the Assessment criteria of the Presentation and the report part of the Product. You will have material for teaching academic honesty and presentation skills as part of the Taught Element.
