Goal 4 Developing the West: Tiered Assignments
Directions: Students must select and complete one assignment from each of the four [4] “tiers.” All assignments are due by the Friday of the week you receive them. Check point values for each tiers’ assignments before you begin them.

Tier 1- Objective 4.01: Compare and contrast the different groups of people who migrated to the West and describe the problems they experienced. [20 points]
Choice 1 Write a letter to the Homestead Act application committee explaining why your application for a 160 homestead should be approved. You may also deliver a speech explaining yourself [to the class must be 3 minutes long]. Your answer/speech must be descriptive and include related facts from what you learn.

Choice 2 Write a letter to the Morrill Land Grant college committee why your application for a land grant to found/create a college/university [talk about the programs you plan to offer]. You may also deliver a speech explaining yourself [to the class must be 3 minutes long]. Your answer/speech must be descriptive and include related facts from what you learn.

Choice 3 Create an 8-panel cartoon strip describing the challenges and experiences of Western migrants. Your answer/speech must be descriptive and include related facts from what you learn [color is required; colored pencils/markers are acceptable].

Tier 2- Objective 4.02: Evaluate the impact that settlement in the West had upon different groups of people and upon the environment. [20 points]

Choice 1 Create a plan to strike back at the U.S. Army for the battles waged against you as a member of a Native-American tribe. You may also deliver a speech explaining yourself [to the class must be 3 minutes long]. Your answer/speech must be descriptive and include related facts from what you learn.

Choice 2 Write a one-page diary entry explaining your thoughts about the opening of the Transcontinental Railroad. Be sure to explain how the railroad will help or hurt the nation [be specific]. You may also deliver a speech explaining yourself [to the class must be 3 minutes long]. Your answer/speech must be descriptive and include related facts from what you learn

Choice 3 Write a one-page newspaper article describing the challenges and public opinions of the Reservations and the Dawes Severalty Act [Must be in columns and an image just like a real newspaper].

Tier 3- Objective 4.03: Describe the causes and effects of the financial difficulties that plagued the American farmer and trace the rise and decline of Populism. [20 points]

Choice 1 Write a response to Bryan’s Cross of Gold speech explaining whether you agree or disagree with what he said. You may also deliver a speech explaining yourself [to the class must be 3 minutes long]. Your answer/speech must be descriptive and include related facts from what you learn

Choice 2 Create 6-inch by 6-inch poster cards describing 10 curriculum terms from Objective 4.03. You must have at least 5 sentences in your own words describing each term. You must also have an image for each.

Choice 3 Create an 8-panel cartoon strip describing the facts and decisions surrounding the following court cases: Munn v. Illinois (1877) and Wabash v. Illinois (1886).

Tier 4- Objective 4.04: Describe innovations in agricultural technology and business practices and assess their impact on the West. [40 points]

Choice 1 Create a 8-slide power point show explaining vertical or horizontal integration [you must have one image for each content slide. You must have title slide with your name, a bibliography slide for the exact URLs you used and obtained images.

Choice 2 Create a Youtube video explaining in your own words all five curriculum terms from Objective 4.04 [must be at least 3 minutes long]

Choice 3 Create a Podcast explaining how the macro and micro concepts in Objective 4.04 connect to each of the five curriculum terms in Objective 4.04.
