AC0657/AC0502 – FACILITATING LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT IN PRACTICE

The purpose of this module, delivered at both academic level 5 and 6 (Diploma and Degree) is to prepare practitioners in health and social care settings to assume responsibility for the facilitation of learning and assessment in practice. You will be expected to compile a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates that you can work with learners to identify their learning needs, facilitate learning and assessment and supervise them in the practice area. Interactive classroom sessions will be used to help you explore your experiences of practice learning. Directed learning activities in the form of a workbook will help you with this process.

The module will promote a critical approach to the examination of current theories of learning with literature that will be drawn from a multi-professional perspective. Your portfolio will incorporate reflection upon your activity and evaluation of key aspects of your practice. Your learning will be verified against relevant professional body standards for supporting practice learning.

AC0658 – practice teaching

The purpose of this module is to enable participants to achieve the standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for Practice Teaching. Students will need to demonstrate their understanding of learning theory, application of this in the practice setting, initiation of the evaluation of learning and leadership in evidence based practice and practice development. Students will be assessed using a portfolio to demonstrate their achievement of the NMC domains and an essay that critically reflects upon the impact of evidence based practice and practice development on student learning in the practice setting.
Teaching will be offered for theoretical aspects of learning theory and reflective practice but the majority of learning will be work-based.
This will enable students to integrate their learning whilst supporting students’ learning in the practice setting.

ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW:

The summative assessment for this module will have two parts:
1. A portfolio that provides evidence of the achievement of NMC standards for Practice Teachers (LO1 2 3 & 6). The portfolio will be structured into the following sections: Context of practice, Inter-professional working, Evidence-based practice and leadership, Evaluation and ‘Signing off’.
2. An essay (LO 4 & 5)
Students will be required to provide a written account that critically explores the issues around the delivery of evidence- based practice and practice development in their practice and evaluate the effectiveness of student learning and achievement of proficiencies. This essay will be set within the context of a specific area of practice eg infant feeding, wound care, mental health in older people etc.
A pass is required in both components.
Formative assessment will take place through structured reflective activities in the classroom and practice setting, as well as through peer review sessions.

AC6607 – governance in mental health/learning disability

This module aims to provide students with a critical perspective related to the structures, processes and outcomes of governance in Mental Health/Learning Disability practice. Governance and associated policy will be considered from macro/national to micro/local levels of consideration, and will encompass primary (including early intervention), secondary and tertiary contexts of service delivery. The assessment will invite students to contextualise and critically articulate governance structures, policy and processes framing their own practice contexts.

ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW:

aSummative assessment and rationale for tasks

Students will be invited, in the form of a written account to critically articulate governance structures, policy and processes which frame their own practice contexts, and their own role within these systems and processes. They will also provide a reflective account of the way governance arrangements directly influence practice. 3,500 words.

bAdditional formative assessment – detail of process and rationale

The reflective summary of the influence of governance on practice will be informed by a formative, structured learning log, which will also inform seminar presentation to learning peers.

AC0689 – ASSESSING NEED FOR HEALTH IMPROVEMENT AND INNOVATIONS

Health need assessment is a key driver within the Government’s agenda for transforming and delivering primary care services that meet the needs of diverse communities and address health inequalities. The module will expose students to the origins and development of public health, highlighting the significance of public health and the prevention of ill health in contemporary society. This module therefore aims to integrate theory, research and practice to enable the student to develop a critical understanding of the public health agenda. In addition students will demonstrate the application of the principles of health need assessment to diverse communities, caseloads or client/patient groups. Key concepts such as inequalities, need and community will be explored and models and frameworks that underpin the needs assessment process will be applied to a specific community. Learning will be facilitated through lectures, seminar and workshops. The module will be summatively assessed by the student completing a health needs assessment on a specified community.

ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW:

Summative assessment and rationale for tasks

This module will be assessed through a 4,000 word health need assessment assignment. Students will be expected to define a specific community, utilise an assessment framework, analyse a range of data and literature to determine the health /social need with the aim of reducing health inequalities. This assignment is summatively assessed against specified criteria and students will be provided with written feedback (learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

bAdditional formative assessment – detail of process and rationale

Workshops, facilitated by academic staff, will be utilised to support students to identify their community, select an appropriate framework/ model and identify data they will need to collect to support the process and the identification of health /social need. Verbal feedback will be provided by peers and academic staff at the workshops to support their learning. (learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4)

cIndication of how students will get feedback and how this will support their learning

AC0690 – DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP CAPACITY AND MANAGING CHANGE

Developing leadership capacity and managing change are an integral part of the Government’s transformation agenda and as such places health professionals at the frontline of supporting and developing patient centred care through effective leadership and service development. This module aims to integrate theory, research and practice to enable the practitioner to develop leadership capacity and capability in order to develop the team, lead change and instigate effective service delivery at a variety of levels within the organisation. This will be achieved by utilising a variety of approaches to teaching and learning that support the students’ individual development. This will include the use of lectures, action learning sets, the use of self assessment/diagnostic tools and the e-learning portal. Formative and summative assessments will involve students critiquing culture, leadership and change within organisations to improve service delivery. The summative assessment will culminate learning within a 4000 word essay.

ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW:

  1. Summative assessment and rationale for tasks

This will be in the form of a 4000 word essay in which students will critically explore influencing factors and processes of leading and managing change. This will require that students examine the concepts of leadership theory and change management in relation to managing and leading change within their own sphere of practice. Students may draw on past, present or future developments to critically analyse relevant issues and processes for successful service developments.

Feedback will be provided formatively during group and individual tutorials and summatively through written comments within the final feedback assessment. (LO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

  1. Additional formative assessment – detail of process and rationale

Students will undertake a variety of self and organisational assessments to aid critical exploration of their own leadership capacity and capability in relation to organisational learning and development. These will be undertaken within workshops and action learning sets. (LO 1, 3)

  1. Indication of how students will get feedback and how this will support their learning
