EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The Awards Board requests that the IEEE Life Members Committee renew its support for the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal for an additional three-year period (2013 – 2015) with an annual gift of US$7,500. The amount is one quarter of the total annual cost for the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal, US$25,000, and is at the same level as the previous three year-period.

PROPOSED ACTION:

Resolved that the IEEE Life Members Committee provide support to fund the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal shall be, and is hereby, approved.

BACKGROUND:

The IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal was established in 1956, and is awarded to an individual for a career of outstanding contributions to education that have inspired others to accelerate advances in technology for the benefit of humanity. The award consists of a gold medal, a bronze replica, a certificate, and a US$20,000 honorarium.

The IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal represents the shared commitment of IEEE and the IEEE Life Members Committee to recognize the importance of the educator’s contributions to the vitality, imagination, and leadership of the members of technical and professional communities worldwide.

As the original and sole sponsor of this Medal from 1956 through 1992, the IEEE Life Members Committee set the standard for other organizations committed to honoring engineering education to join them and become co-sponsors of the Medal.

The Life Members Committee has recently co-sponsored the Medal with MathWorks, National Instruments Foundation, and Pearson Education, Inc. The IEEE Awards Board is awaiting confirmation from these three organizations on continuance of support for the Medal.

The IEEE Awards Board considers the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr.Education Medal a vital component of the prized portfolio of IEEE Awards. The annual, impressive number of nominations submitted for this Medal, and the selection of highly accomplished recipients are key indicators that reflect the keen, peer interest in recognizing the achievements of this most prestigious group of educators around the globe.

Financial sponsorship of the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal

The annual cost to present the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal is approximately US$25,000 per year, which is divided equally among the co-sponsors of the award (US$7,500 per each of four co-sponsors). A breakdown of expenses follows.

The additional contribution of US$1,250 would be added to the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal Fund to cover expenses of the medal in future years when the amount of available funding is insufficient to cover ongoing expenses, with the goal of eventually accumulating sufficient additional funds to support the presentation of the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal far into the future.

- IEEE Honors Ceremony

The recipients of the highest level IEEE Medals, Awards and Recognitions are

honored at this major annual awards event. Approximately 400 people attend the IEEE Honors Ceremony each year. Invitees include the award recipients and their guests, the sponsors of IEEE Medals, Awards and Recognitions, thoughts leaders in industry and academia, the IEEE Board of Directors, and members of major organizational units and standing committees of IEEE.

The IEEE President recognizes IEEE Medals, Awards, and Recognitions sponsors by name during the award presentation. Signage welcoming and thanking the IEEE award sponsors is posted at the entrance to the room where the Honors Ceremony is held. Sponsors have the opportunity to meet and mingle with award recipients during a pre-reception and have their photos taken with the IEEE President and the recipients. Sponsors are normally seated with their award recipients during dinner. Photos taken during the event are provided to our sponsors.

The IEEE Honors Ceremony is broadcast live on IEEE.tv, and may also be

viewed at a later date on the IEEE.tv web page - http://ieeetv.ieee.org/.

An event showcase page on IEEE.tv displays award sponsors logos, and

sponsor logos are revealed during the count down to the live broadcast of

event.

- IEEE Awards Booklet and IEEE Technical Field Award Brochures

The IEEE Awards Booklet is distributed digitally to approximately 400,000

IEEE members, and is distributed in hard copy to IEEE Honors Ceremony

attendees. The Booklet includes the names and biographical information on

the recipients of IEEE Medals, Awards, and Recognitions, the names of

sponsors, and other information about the IEEE Awards Program. The Awards

Booklet is also posted on the IEEE Awards Home Page. The sponsors of IEEE Medals, Awards, and Recognitions also are listed in the brochures that are distributed at IEEE Technical Field Awards presentations held worldwide at various IEEE conferences and meetings.

The IEEE Foundation Honor Roll of Donors is distributed to the donors and supporters of the IEEE Foundation. Select photos of award recipients and sponsors taken at the IEEE Honors Ceremony are also published in the Honor Roll.

The annual call for nominations for IEEE Medals, Awards and Recognitions includes the names of award sponsors, and is published in IEEE's global newspaper, THE INSTITUTE, which is distributed to the IEEE membership, and a call for nominations and press release are distributed to the top engineering schools around the world. In addition, the call for nominations is included on the IEEE Awards web site - www.ieee.org/awards and on the membership portal, myIEEE.

Information on IEEE Medals, Awards and Recognitions recipients and sponsors is provided to IEEE newsletter and magazine editors, and is published at the discretion of the editors.

Additionally, the award recipients are requested to provide a list of the external publications to which they would like the IEEE to provide news releases, but publication of such will be at the discretion of the external publications' editors. Various news releases are sent to the local media to promote the recipients, sponsors and presentation venues.
