November 3, 2012

Greetings fellow coaches,

The Greeley West Forensics team and I would like to invite you to compete in the Leonidas Cup Greeley West Varsity invitational tournament on January 19th, 2013. This tournament will have 2 waves of events Blue and Gold to allow students to double enter so long as they are in 1 Blue Wave Event and 1 Gold Wave Event. This will also allow Debate rounds to be powered.

The Events will be as follows:

Blue Wave Events: CX, PF, Drama, Humor, NX and Student Congress.

Gold Wave Events: LD, Duo, OO, FX, Poetry, Creative Storytelling and Student Congress.

**Congress Notice** There will be a session of congress in each wave. We will emulate the real congress and have a revolving congress session in our amphitheater for one section (which helps add to the look of a real congress chamber) and we’ll add another room if numbers require it. Students will attend the congress session in one wave, then take an extended personal privilege and go to the next wave for their second event. The student must be in all three ‘mini-rounds’ to be eligible for an award & the last PO standing (like Leonidas’ mighty 300) will get the gavel. Please!! E-mail me legislation so we do not have to post and use stuff from past tournaments.

Fees and Registration: Fees of $8.00 per single entry, $16.00 per team (CX, Duo and PF) and $5.00 per student congress entry are based on pre-registration.

Please make the checks payable to: Greeley West HS Forensics.

You will need to register on www.speechmeets.com (Thank you Dave and Vicki Howard for making life so much easier!!) and I would ask that you please enter the names of your competitors on speechmeets this way we will have their names in the Tab room and the printed posting sheets will have codes and names to keep from having any DQ’s.

Entries: Single or Double Entries only!!Please limit entries to a maximum of 5 per debate event (if you bring a debate judge – 4 if not) and a max of 5 for all other events, unlimited for Student Congress. If you wish to have additional entries, contact me and we will see if that request can be accommodated.

****We will accept entries until 40 rooms are filled****

Judges: Judges’ Lounge will be Room 705 Your help in accumulating enough judges to make our tournament run smoothly is always appreciated. We will be paying $8.00 a round and providing lunch for them. If you have judges’ contact information and you’d like to pass that along I’d be glad to contact them or if you have not yet heard there is also a Facebook page -- “Rocky Mountain North Forensics Judges” that you can have your judges ‘like’ and be updated with judging information. Thank you Sarah French-Hahn and Emily Wallin!!

We will also ask that ALL coaches judge 2 rounds during the day. No matter the circumstance, every team is required to donate two rounds of judging by any person. Coaches not wishing to judge or who do not provide a judge for the 2 donated rounds will be asked to pay a $30 judge fee.

*****All Judges should check in at the Judge’s Table in front of Rooms 602/604*****

Awards: Trophies or plaques will be awarded to all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners; 4th, 5th, and 6th will receive ribbons, as will Superior and Excellent competitors in each event. P.O.’s will receive gavels and Superior and Outstanding speakers will receive framed, hand signed certificates from Mrs. Shelly Robbins (Principal).

Extemp Draw and CX Start times: As we all know these events can change the schedule of a tournament in a heartbeat, so I would like to be starting CX and Exempt Draw promptly at 7:30am. If your competitors arrive late they may not get their full prep time and we will be sticking to this schedule so please plan accordingly especially in light of our wonderfully unpredictable Colorado weather in January. If you are going to be late call my Cell phone (970) 227-4442 we will try to do our best to help you but make no guarantees.

Extemp Draw: Will be located in the Library (just off the “HUB” that connects all the hallways, you know like a wheel). We will try to have draw start 30 Minutes prior to the round. Be sure your competitors are close by and paying attention to avoid any delays or loss of prep time. All double entered competitors should go directly to the draw room after their round is over and check in before grabbing food or making a restroom stop to know how much time they have.

Creative Storytelling Draw: This will take place in Room 606 (The lecture hall style presentation room). We will try to have draw start 15 minutes prior to the round. Again be sure your competitors are close by and paying attention to avoid any delays or loss of prep time. All double entered competitors should go directly to the draw room after their round is over and check in before grabbing food or making a restroom stop to know how much time they have.

**One issue we’ve had in past years that people did not hear the call for CS Draw**

Tab Room: This will be in Room 703 and all coaches are welcome. Ballots will be available for you in folders in room 602 (connected to Tab by a door or through the door behind the judges’ table. We will be tabbing all events except debate on speechmeets. So we could use help on the program from those that have done it before and we will need tabbers for CX, PF, and LD.

Finals: I have decided to have finals this year for any events in which the numbers warrant it. However, I will not be paneling judges for this round and the “Final” round will be a 4th round with 1 judge and the rankings will be determined by the cumulative scores of the competitors from all 4 rounds rather than a cut-throat style final round.

Debate Topics & the use of laptops:

CX debaters will use the U.S. federal government should substantially increase its transportation infrastructure investment in the U.S. topic. (Please note: while this is a CHSAA tournament, I will NOT mandate that judges have to use the Stock Issues Paradigm… paradigms are up to each individual judge and we will use NFL rules to accommodate out of state competitors) Rebuttals will be 5 minutes.

LD debaters will use the NFL Jan/Feb topic SEE NFL website.

PF debaters will use the NFL January topic SEE NFL website. For PF, sides will be determined in TAB. NO COIN FLIP. Make sure your debaters are aware of this as any competitors that talk the judge into a coin toss will be DQed.

Laptop Use: The use of laptops will be allowed for flowing and file retrieval, but the use of WiFi will NOT be allowed. Cheating will result in an IMMEDIATE DQ from the tournament and if the offending team won the ballot, it will be overturned. This is the one and only warning.

Lunch: Lunch will be served for coaches and judges in the judges’ lounge and food room. The concession stand will serve pizza, snacks, and other goodies. They will sell various items. There are a few restaurants within short walking distance of Greeley West such as: Burger King and Subway. Extempers, CXers, and Creative Storytellers should probably not leave for lunch or they risk loss of round or prep. time.

Remember: “Choose your words carefully….They may be your last…”
