ASSEMBLY-FLIGHT MANUAL for

TMAX-ECC-Snow White-RS80 (Ver.1.2 by MF, Sep. 2004)

At this stage:

Ozonesonde preparation (advance & day-of-sounding) has been done;

RS80-TMAX preparation has been done;

Outrigger preparation has been done (if you have Snow White);

Snow White-TMAX preparation has been done, & Air inlet tube has been installed to Snow White.

I. GROUND RECEIVING SYSTEM SETUP

II. PAYLOAD ASSEMBLY (I)

(II - 1) Install TMAX-C board in the ECC

- Use four spacers and (maybe two) nuts to fix the TMAX-C board.

- Fix the nuts firmly using a pliers.

- Connect the ECC pump thermister connector at the 9-10 pins (the 5 th row; no polarity).

- Connect the ECC sensor connector at the 1-2 pins. Blue cable goes to the upper pin.

- Finally, the aluminum cover is carefully situated such that

all the cables extend from the top. See the following photographs.

(II - 2) Install ECC into the Flight Box

Note: Put the 21 V battery pack in the RS80 battery compartment. Change the Frequency to 403 MHz.

(a) Without Snow White

(b) With Snow White

III. OZONESONDE BACKGROUND CURRENT

& OTHER CHECKS

(1) Start PC. Set Date and Time at UT/GMT.

(2) Start the software STRATO.EXE.

Give a sequential number to the Flight Name.

Type in the parameter numbers from the checksheet.

(3) Receiver (WFM & AFC) and Modem ON. (WFM=Wide FM; AFC=Auto-Frequency Control)

(4) Activate RS80 with the 21 V battery. Set the frequency around 403 MHz (avoid radiostations).

(5) Set the frequency of the receiver around 403 MHz. Check AFC.

(6) Check the PTU numbers on the software. Are they reasonable?

(7) By using an extension tube, connect the ozonesonde inlet tube to the KTU NO O3 port.

(8) Activate ECC pump using the KTU 12 V port. Run the Zero-ozone air.

(9) By pushing the key F4, look at the Ozone Pressure plot.

(10) After 10 minutes, confirm that the ozone concentration is low and stable.

Then, push the F9 key, and ENTER the background current.

Write down the HEX value on the checksheet.

The final background current should be around 005 – 01F, whose unit in Hex.

(11) Activate Snow White by the battery connector. Send air through the inlet tube by a handy fan.

Check the Snow White data on the software. Are the numbers reasonable?

(12) Stop Snow White. Stop ECC. Stop RS80.

IV. PAYLOAD ASSEMBLY (II)

(1a) If you have Snow White, fix the Snow White and Outrigger+RS80 to the Flight Box firmly.

(1b) If you do not have Snow White, fix RS80 (without outrigger) to the Flight Box firmly.

(2) Put the Cover of the Flight Box (the pump battery connectors should extend outside).

(3) Activate RS80 (21V battery), Snow White (battery connector), and ECC pump.

(4) Check the output-numbers on STRATO.EXE. Are they really reasonable?

P ; T ; V FP ; SW FP ; Peltier I ; Spec V. ; O3 ; T-pump

(5) Stop ECC, Snow White, and RS80. Bring the payload to the launch site.

V. BALLOON PREPARATION

(1) Start the balloon inflation.

(2) Connect the parachute-unwinder to the balloon. Connect the payload to the unwinder.

VI. LAUNCH & POST-LAUNCH PROCEDURES

(1) After connecting balloon-parachute-unwinder-payload, and activating all the sensors,

check the output-numbers on the STRATO.EXE again. This is the final check.

P ; T ; V FP ; SW FP ; Peltier I ; Spec V. ; O3 ; T-pump

Are they really reasonable?

(2) Start the MD data backup recorder. Check the preamplifier.

(3) Launch the sonde. STRATO will automatically detect the launch.

(4) Write the weather information at the launch site on the checksheet.

(5) Watch the STRATO, receiver, and modem during the sounding.

Watch the receiver meter. If it is unstable, change the antenna choice.

(6) After the balloon burst, the descending data may also be captured until the signal disappears.

(7) After the signal disappears, terminate the software by pushing the F1 key.

(You may see some warning messages, but just ignore them.)

Save all the data files ( *.DE1, *.RAW, *FLT.DAT, V*.CAL, etc.) to a media (FD, etc.).

(8) Send the data files (zip) and checksheet (scan) to Masatomo Fujiwara immediately via email.
