PHED 131 Step Aerobics
Spring 2011
Course Description
This course is an introduction to the components of physical fitness through aerobic training. Cross-training activities will include circuit/interval training, body sculpting, and step workouts.
One academic unit of credit, no prerequisite.
Course Objectives
To gain the knowledge and understanding of:1. The five components of physical fitness.
2. Basic anatomy, exercise physiology, and wellness principles.
3. Basic diet & nutrition information.
4. The importance of exercise as a lifestyle. / To learn and develop the following skills:
1. How to assess and improve fitness level.
2. How to develop an individual fitness program.
3. The basic steps utilized in step aerobics.
4. How to appraise/critique an aerobics class.

Participation/Performance
Timely and consistent attendance is imperative in order to improve overall fitness and to obtain supplemental course information. Failure to attend class will impact your final grade.
Equipment
USC student id, proper workout attire, water, towel, notebook and pen/pencil.
Evaluation Criteria 250 total points
Cognitive: 50% / Psychomotor: 50%Assignment (25 points) / 10% / Fitness Profile (15 points) / 6%
Midterm (50 points) / 20% / Group Project (10 points) / 4%
Final Exam (50 points) / 20% / Class Performance (100 points) / 40%
If you are absent on a day that an assignment is due, you must still get the assignment in on time.
Late assignments accepted at ½ credit. Exam make-ups will not be given. Extra credit is not available.
Academic Accommodations
Any student requesting academic accommodations based on a disability are required to register with Disability Services and Programs (DSP) each semester. A letter of verification for approved accommodations can be obtained from DSP. Please be sure the letter is delivered to me (the instructor) as early in the semester as possible.
