Bienville Parish 4-H Project Book Guide 2012-2013
Listed below are brief descriptions of the wide variety of project books offered on a first come, first served basis for different grade levels. 4-H agents will be happy to assist with choosing another project book if we are out of stock of a particular project book. Many more projects are available and will be on the enrollment forms you will complete. If you have any questions about one that is not listed here, please call us at 318-263-7400 to inquire about it. As instructors are trained in more Outdoor Skills disciplines, we will make those areas available for you.

Discovering 4-H #2348
The Discovering 4-H Book is the entry level book for all 4-H'ers. It covers all areas of 4-H. For a copy please see your local 4-H agent.

Learn how to plan and plant a garden, what to do while you wait for your garden to grow, how to care for your garden, how to harvest and store produce and careers related to gardening. A helper's guide offers activities, ideas and content for leaders.

Swine: The Incredible Pig #8065
You’ll learn about pig parts, breeds, the cost of raising pigs, how to care for your pigs and much, much more. You’ll also be learning about yourself too.
Teaming With Insects – Entomology Level 1 #8440 (4-5th)
The study of insects is called entomology. The Teaming with Insects curriculum is written for youth who enjoy learning about science and nature by studying insects. Level 1 introduces the world of insects. Activities focus on how they look and move and provide some background for studying important entomology topics.
Pet Pals #6359
You will learn how to pick the right pet, get to know your pet, care for your pet and you can have fun with Guinea Pigs as you learn pet vocabulary.

Science, Engineering, & Technology
You and the Environment #2447
The environment is everything around us -- air, water, land, plants and animals. It’s our job to take care of these things so our world will always be a beautiful, healthy place to live. The more we learn, the better steward or keeper of our earth we become. This project book is made up of four sections: wildlife and fisheries; insects; water; and wastes. 4-H'ers must complete at least four activities or the number required by their 4-H agent or leader and fill in the record for those activities in the back of the book. Youth may choose to do all of the activities in one section or choose activities from different sections. Youth can learn about: ecology, the relationship all living things have to each other; the management of wildlife and fisheries to preserve their place in the balance of nature; how to find insects, identify them and make a collection; how to save, or conserve, water and keep it safe; how to reduce the wastes that end up in landfills; and learn to identify hazardous wastes.

Understand basic small engine concepts, study external engine parts, discover tools of the trade and learn the concepts behind what makes small engines work. Explore the uses of small engines and safety issues.
Teaming with Insects – Entomology Level 2 #8441 (6-8th)
Level 2 shows you how to make insect collection tools and expands on the basic concepts of biodiversity, invasive species, integrated pest management and forensic entomology.

Shooting Sports: Shotgun #752
This new 4-H member record book is intended to help shotgun members document their growth, development, and progress. You should complete a separate 4-H shooting sports member record book for each shooting discipline in which you participate. A 4-H shooting sports shotgun project requires that educational activities are organized and conducted by one or more certified 4-H shooting sports instructors.

Investigating Electricity #6849
This project is designed for youth who understand magnetism, electron flow and circuit design. Youth build circuits and test voltages, build a rocket launcher and a burglar alarm as they practice decision-making and communication.
Warm It Up: Small Engines
Youth explore internal parts of engines, learn about engine sizes, compression ratios, seasoning their engines and safety issues. Youth also learn about occupational possibilities and about starting their own business.
Photography: Controlling the Image #PC2
Youth will explore photography including depth of field, aperture and shutter speeds, hard and soft lighting, silhouettes and flash techniques. Youth will also learn how to evaluate composition using the rule of thirds, the golden triangle and the golden rectangle. They will also learn how to use different viewpoints and come to understand positive and negative space.

You will consider the various types of shelters and tents that you can use for camping, how to pack and plan meals and how to keep your campsite beautiful for future campers. Animal Health Care #2529
Youth will discuss the health and well-being of animals. Some of the activities planned in this book involve contact with animals and require one to own a pet or live near horses or farm animals that can be observed.

More About Pets #2511
Youth will explore the responsibilities of owning a pet. Activities include record keeping, games and many demonstrations to present to one's club.
Climbing Up – Cat #8149
At this level, you can learn how to identify cat breeds and study the characteristics of domestic cats as you also learn about their cousins. You can teach your pet how to “cats-ercise”. Feline first aid will be a skill you develop while you learn about health and nutrition. Cat ownership can be rewarding when you share your pet with another person.
Canine Connection – Dog #8167
If dogs are your pet of choice, you can learn how to select and care for them as you also learn health and nutrition and the skills to train them. Your dog will reward you with many hours of fun and companionship. You will develop budgeting skills as you discover all the things it takes to raise a dog including vet and grooming expenses, boarding and training expenses, food and licensing fees and many other supplies such as leashes, toys, and collars.
