DESCRIPTION OF COURSE

In this course every learner will use Spanish, in addition to English, to engage in meaningful, intercultural communication, understand and interpret the spoken and written language, and present information, concepts and ideas in local and global communities. Through learning the language, they will gain an understanding of the perspectives of other cultures and compare the language and cultures learned with their own.

THE LEARNER PROFILE

The primary focus in language B is developing students as communicators who understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language. Students also grow as risk-takers as they learn to express themselves in a new language and as open-minded individuals as they learn the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities.

MYP AIMS ADDRESSED BY THIS COURSE

Some of the aims of the study of Language B are to:

· enable the student to use language effectively as a means of practical communication, providing a sound base of communication skills necessary for future study, work and leisure

· enable the student to understand the nature of language and the process of language learning

· offer insight into the cultural characteristics of the communities where the language is spoken

· foster curiosity, and a lifelong interest and enjoyment of language learning

At the end of the course the students should be able to:

·  communicate information, ideas and opinions

·  demonstrate comprehension of specific factual information and attitudes, expressed in spoken and written contexts

·  engage actively in oral production using comprehensible pronunciation and intonation
