Installing software on your computer
All computers at CSU are delivered to your desk with a standard set of software already installed.
At times you may need to install additional software onto your computer to perform various tasks.
There are 2 ways you can install additional software onto your computer.
Install Software Icon
Use the CSU Install Software application on your desktop if you want to install software which is to be made available by the CSU Computer Shop.
• There are a number of software packages available for staff to download at any time depending on their need. These packages are free of charge and include Nvivo, IBM SPSS and others.
• If you purchase specific software, such as Adobe Acrobat, from the computer shop it will be uploaded to the software installer and you will be notified when it is available for you to install.
You can find information relating to the software available by visiting the CSU Computer Shop website and selecting Software.
To install software using the CSU Install Software application.
- Click on the Install Software icon on your desktop
- Select the software you wish to install
- Click the Install button at the bottom right of the window
- You will see a message asking if you want to install the software. Click on Run Now
- Depending on the software you are installing you may be prompted to close down other programs such as Internet Explorer whilst the installation is taking place. This is perfectly normal.
You may also notice that your computer appears to lock or freeze during the installation. This is normal and is due to the input from your mouse and keyboard being locked until the installation is completed.
Software Install Rights
You may need software install rights if you have a licensed copy of a software package on a disk or have downloaded a program from the web. Prior to purchasing software from a source other than the CSU Computer Shop you must obtain DIT approval by emailing your request to and including the reason you wish to purchase the product.
To apply for Software Install Rights follow these steps:
- Log into Staff.CSU, go to the IT Services section of the Quick Links bar and click the Software Install Rights link.
- If it does not load by default, select the Installer tab
- Ensure you read and are aware of the terms and conditions
- Enter the name of the software you wish to install
- Click the Accept button.
After completing the steps above, wait for approximately 15 minutes before logging out and back into your PC. The installation rights will then be in effect for approximately an hour and a half.
