Part I: Information about your group/organization

Please feel free to attach any additional sheets and/or information such as brochures, press reports etc.

1. Name of the group/organization requesting funds.
Michael A.Daube Charitable Trust,
Reg. No 9302
The organization has an FCRA (Foreign Currency Regulation Act) certificate in place, so transfer of funds internationally is no problem.
2. When was the group established?
08-21-1997
3. Briefly describe the motivation for starting this group.
The trust works on development of villages in Orissa. It started a hospital construction project in the village of Juanga in Galadhari district of Orissa near Cuttack. After the cyclone in 1999, the trust expanded to cover education for village children.
4. Briefly describe the aims of your group.
The project aims to provide a starting system and facilitate further establishment of a working school system in the village. The village and other surrounding villages had no public school after they were washed away in floods during the cyclone of 1999. The government has not taken much action and money allocated for school construction was not put to the designated use. The trust has now built a two-storeyed school building and is raising funds for having 3 teachers educate 100 ( and in the future 200) children and provide for their basic books and lunch.
5. Does your group have any religious or political affiliation? If yes, please describe the type of affiliation and the reason for it.
None.
6. What non education-related community development activities is your group involved in?
The trust was initially involved in setting up a hospital in the village. The development of this project led of necessity to activities which impact the community. For instance, the hospital obtained a jeep which is used to transport patients to and from the hospital and a cell phone which facilitates communication in this village which before had no telephones at all. The hospital has begun outreach to the community regarding disease prevention and sanitation as well as health education for women.

__
12. Describe the socio-economic background of the children and their parents (e.g. education, occupational). If any of your students are employed, please tell us about that as well.
The population is mostly low caste farmers living without proper electric or road communication. They are reluctant to have their children seek education. Families would be forced to sell land (what little they may have left) to acquire enough money for books, uniforms, transport ect. Most of the time the children are kept at home as laborers instead, to help pay for the food they eat.
13. In addition to education, does your group provide any other services to the children in your schools (e.g. food, health care, clothing, etc.)?
There are plans to provide lunch in the school. Books, uniforms and school supplies would also be provided.
14. Does your school have:

None
21. Is your program different from that provided at these schools? Please explain.
No
22. Why are the children in your school/s not attending government/other schools in the local area?
There are no government schools. They were destroyed during previous floods and there has been no effort from government to reconstruct them. The money sanctioned was put to other uses by local officials.
23. Do you try to involve the parents of the children in the running of the school (e.g. in setting the syllabus etc.)? Please specify.
The villagers are very involved in the school and have helped out in the construction also. Plans are to involve the parents in other ways such as getting them involved with the homework assignments given to the children.
24. What are your expansion plans for the future (e.g. adding more classes or schools)?
The plans are to persuade the government however possible to expand upon the work already created by duplicating it in other villages. With or without such help, attempts will be made to involve neighboring communities in expanding upon the model set up in Juanga. The plan for the school building in Juanga is to expand by constructing additions to the school as needed for an increasing number of children, provided funding can be obtained either locally, nationally or internationally.
25. Do you have any suggestions on how Asha can be a positive influence in changing the education scenario in India?
