6-7 Basketball Rules
Practices
· Teams will practice one evening a week for up to one (1) hour in duration.
· Instruction at practices will be provided by the program’s volunteer coaches.
· Emphasis should be placed on skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork, and fun.
Games
· Games will be played on Sundays at the YMCA, as reflected on the league schedule created for this age division.
· Teams will be provided with a (5-10) minute warm-up prior to the start of each game.
· All games will consist of four (4), six (6) minute quarters.
· Overtime periods will be used as follows: 1st overtime of 2:00, 2nd overtime 1:00, and if still tied a sudden death period will begin using a jump ball as start.
· An official game clock will be utilized.
· The clock will stop for substitutions, injuries, time-outs, and dead balls.
· All players need to check in at scorers table before entering game.
· There will be a one (1) minute break between quarters and a five (5) minute half-time break.
· Games will be 5 vs. 5, unless one team is short players, then teams will be equally manned.
Court, Basket Height, Ball Size
· Games will be played on the main basketball court in the YMCA gymnasium.
· Eight and a half (6 1/2) foot rims and a 28.5 inch (women’s size) basketball will be used.
Keeping Score
· Score will be kept.
· Time will be kept on the scoreboard.
· Scorekeepers will record the playing time and personal fouls of each player.
Time Outs
· Coaches are allowed four (4) time-out per game. Time-outs DO NOT carry over. You will receive one (1) Time-Out for overtime periods.
· Time-outs must be called by the coach (bench).
· Time-outs can only be called in a dead ball situation or by the team in possession of the ball
Defense
· Only man-to-man defense is allowed.
· At the beginning of each quarter officials will assist coaches in matching the players up to the opposing players they will defend.
· Once the defending team obtains possession of the ball (following a rebound, a turnover, or a made basket), the attacking team must drop back to half court.
· No full court pressing or double teams allowed.
Free Throws
· Free throws will be awarded ONLY on shooting fouls.
· No “Bonus” free throws awarded.
· Officials will assist with getting all players into the proper position for free throws.
· Free throws will be shot from the normal free throw line, with leniency granted to smaller players.
· Players are not permitted in the lane to rebound a missed free throw until the ball hits the rim.
· The clock will not stop during free throws.
Officiating
· Officials will explain what the player “did wrong” when a foul or violation is called.
· Officials will make sure to handle calls in a way that will not be upsetting or embarrassing to a player.
· The officials’ primary objective is to control the game, and to do so in an instructional manner.
Regulations During Games
· Players may not wear jewelry (rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, watches, etc.)
· Players may not chew gum.
· Players must wear basketball shoes or tennis shoes.
· Players must wear their league t-shirt.
· Glasses wearers must also wear a headband to secure glasses.
· Spectators (parents, grandparents, etc.) must sit in a designated area, opposite the team area.
· Coaches must keep team members that are resting (not playing) in the team area.
Specific Rules, Modifications, and Violations
Weeks 1 – 3:
· A jump ball at mid-court will begin each game. (alternate possession from that point)
· Players will be allowed 2 steps before “traveling” is called.
· Players will be given one warning if they dribble using both hands simultaneously.
· Grabbing, pushing, reaching-in, and over-the-back fouls WILL be called after an initial warning, in an effort to teach players the correct rules and to keep the game under control.
· Players that commit six (6) personal fouls have fouled out and must be removed from the game.
· Players will be allowed up to ten (10) seconds to pass the ball in bounds or to another player.
