Main Purpose of the Job:
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Fundraising Officer will be responsible for devising and implementing a sustainable strategy to identify and action opportunities to fund the Charity’s capital development projects and conservation aims. To develop strong links with potential major corporate donors, philanthropic trusts and foundations and the local community.

Key Responsibilities
- Development & Fundraising–Identify key priority projects and create potential major donors/trust fundraising opportunities. Manage and lead all approaches to Trusts, foundations and other funding agencies, building on an annual calendar of key prospects. Develop core generic trust proposals for each programme that requires funding. To write tailored applications, addressing grant-making priorities or requirements as specified by individual trusts and foundations.
To promote sponsorship, partnership, corporate hospitality and volunteering opportunities within the two zoos for the local and regional business community.
To provide first-class stewardship of corporate and trust donors, including writing reports in accordance with the terms and conditions established by donors, and requesting payments in a timely manner. To deliver the highest standards of customer care and represent the Charity and its stakeholders appropriately at all times.
To represent the Charity, as required, at any appropriate events, including making presentations.
Remain up to date with key developments within all appropriate fundraising disciplines.
- Communication & Marketing–Demonstrate excellent oral skills in a variety of contexts, including meetings, presentations and any appropriate training sessions. Produce high quality written material for internal and external audiences, including correspondence, reports and records.
Develop and maintain communication channels across all streams, and be able to adapt your style according to different formats and audience profile. Manage challenging relationships with internal and external stakeholders with diplomacy and tact.
Develop a marketing strategy so that up to date, relevant information, is consistently available to raise the profile of the Charity and maximise its image and conservation aspirations.
- Results Orientated- Understand and be committed to working towards set targets. Be a competent networker and negotiator and be able to secure new contacts and revenue streams. Actively seek new opportunities and use recommendations arising from evaluation and monitoring to improve results.
Objectively review the success and achievements against agreed targets, identifying strengths, weaknesses and areas for development, both internally and externally, in response to funding criteria.
- Problem Solving– Ability to predict where problems might arise and offer constructive solutions. Take a systematic approach to analysing problems where they do arise. Be proactive in seeking the most efficient methods of providing solutions.
- Management – Confidently prepare, interpret and analyse all relevant data, and develop and maintain comprehensive plans for a range of different audiences. Provide the CEO and Board of Trustees with effective updates on the progress of all projects on a regular basis. Actively encourage feedback from both internal and external sources.
Ensure the Charity complies with all statutory and legal obligations and operates in compliance with relevant legislation, best practice and corporate policy and adheres to all the Charity’s policies and procedures.
- Teamwork – Demonstrate a comprehensive awareness of the Charity’s strategic priorities in relation to capital development projects and conservation aims. Develop and contribute to the delivery of relevant events.
Actively share knowledge and experiences with CEO and other team members. Actively listen and consult with CEO over decision making.
Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)
- Work plans and long term strategies developed to support the acquisition of new donors
- Evidence of keeping up to date with new developments in key partnership areas and
priority sectors
- Number of networking events attended each month against target
- Number of new donors secured each quarter against target
- Number of new donor proposals submitted each quarter against target
Other Tasks
1.Undertake any other reasonable tasks, consistent with the nature of the role and its level of responsibility, as required by the CEO and Board of Trustees or other senior colleagues
2.Maintain effective working relationships within the Charity’s internal and external personnel
3.Attend supervision, team meetings, training and other meetings as required
4.Ensure that you display a level of presentation that reflects the agreed Charity’s image.
5.Use all equipment, plant, machinery and services with respect and immediately report any faults or repairs needed to the CEO for action.
6.Due to the nature of the business, and your position within the company, it may be necessary to contact you outside your normal working hours, on the telephone number provided by yourself.
