COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this course is to prepare students for successful employment at their maximum potential. This will be accomplished through assessment of the students’

strengths and weaknesses and matching to interests and abilities. Students will develop and carry out a career plan. They will participate in community based job shadows, work samples in the community or school or paid employment. The students will demonstrate an understanding of job seeking skills, applying for a job , interviewing, and skills in keeping a job.

The class will meet each of the student individual work needs and abilities.

COURSE OF OBJECTIVES:

1.The student will set at least one vocational goal that can be pursuedthrough the job club class.

2.The student will demonstrate a basic awareness of the variety of careers available by listing the 9 job clusters as identified in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (D.O.T.)

3.The student will state the difference between interests, skills, aptitudes and attitude.

4.The student will complete an interest survey

5.The student will identify skills he/she has that will help them get a job.

6.The student will state his/her strengths and needsas identified on the IEP and interpret these in terms of aptitude.

7.The student will state or list behaviors that show a positive attitude on a job.

8.The student will identify preferred working conditions and worker traits relative to his/her needs and abilities.

9.The student will establish a plan to achieve her/his vocational goals.

10.Student will participate in work site field trips from different job cluster areas and complete a questionnaire about each.

11.The student will explore 3 realistic part-time jobs in relation to skills,training requirements and salary.

12.The student will explore three realistic occupations regarding skills training requirements and salary.

13.The student will identify and list the steps involved in searching and applying for a job..

14.The student will make a list of job sources that he/she can use to find a job.

15.The student will demonstrate a basic understanding of the classified ads help wanted vocabulary and abbreviations

16.The student will find job leads, utilizing different sources and complete job lead cards.

17.The student will understand self advocacy and be familiar with community resources that can help obtain employment.

18.The student will list job keeping behaviors and explain why they are important.

19.The student will practice completing job applications.

20.The student will practice goo interviewing skills.

21.The student will complete at least one work sample each quarter.

22.The student will complete a portfolio

23.The student will demonstrate Good Communication Skills on the Job

24.The student will develop phone skills so that he/she can job search and be able to answer the phone correctly.

CAREER AWARENESS AND SELF AWARENESS

  • Assessments covering the students interests,abilities/skills and aptitude.

CAREER EXPLORATION

  • Career Exploration: Field Trips to various businesses, Guest Speakers etc.
  • Identify the Job Clusters and name jobs in them

Job Seeking Skills

  • Identify and list the steps involved in searching and applying for a job
  • Make a list of job sources that can use to find a job
  • Find job leads by using various sources and complete a job lead card
  • Student will understand the difference between Resume and Application and Personal Data Sheet
  • Develop a Resume or Personal Data Sheet
  • Student will learn the steps in a good Job interview
  • Student will complete a simulated job interview

  • Identify Positive Work Behaviors to keep a Job

  • Student will be evaluated on his/her performance and knowledge of work related behaviors

CAREER PREPARTION AND TRAINING

  • The student will be trained and practices job keeping skills though unpaid work samples in the community

METHOD OF EVALUATION:

20% FOR COMPLETING DAILY ASSIGNMENTS,PROJECTS,

AND QUIZES AND DAILY POINTS

80% WORK EVALUATIONS

Daily work evaluation sheets will be completed daily by para-educator, teacher or job trainer. After going over evaluations students will set work goals for the next week. The students will take the sheets home on Fridays, review them with their parent(s), and return them on the following Monday with parent’s signature.

Grading

90% - 100% A

80% - 89% B

70% - 79%C

60% - 69% D

Below - 60% F

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complete all assignments
  • Sign In and Out
  • Represent SM West appropriately in the community and in school
  • Report absences to Job Club teacher by 8:15 AM
  • Call Employer when absent
  • Follow Class rules
