EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY AND ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY

Priddy ISD’s network provides access to the Internet and other educational software. To set up an account you must first read PISD’s Educational Technology and Acceptable Use Policy and sign a legally binding contract called the Priddy ISD Educational Technology and Acceptable Use Policy Contract. The Internet is an electronic information and communications “highway” connecting millions of computers all over the world and millions of individual people. Students, teachers, support staff, parents and community members with network accounts have access to any or all of the following:

§  Information and news from a wide variety of sources and research institutions

§  Public domain and shareware software of all types

§  Discussion groups on a wide variety of topics

§  Access to many university libraries, the Library of Congress and more Dual-Credit and single-credit classes through the Distance Learning Lab

§  Various educational programs, including A+dvantage Learning System, Study Island

With access to computers and people all over the world also comes the availability of some materials that may not be considered to be of educational value within the context of the school setting. The administration and Board of Trustees of Priddy ISD firmly believe that the valuable information and interaction available on this worldwide network far outweigh the possibility of users procuring material that is not consistent with the educational goals within each school. In addition to teacher supervision, Priddy ISD uses N2H2’s filtering program, BESS, to protect students from objectionable content. This protection measure may be temporarily disabled by a teacher for bona fide research purposes.

Here are some of the guidelines provided to establish the responsibilities you are about to acquire. If any user violates any of the provisions, his or her account or access privileges may be terminated, appropriate disciplinary action take, and all future access could be denied.

1.  ACCEPTABLE USE: The purpose of PISD’s provision of access to the Internet is to support research and education in and among schools and academic institutions in the U.S. by providing access to unique resources and the opportunity for collaborative work. The use of your account must be in support of education and research and consistent with the educational objectives of Priddy Independent School District. Use of other organizations’ networks or computing resources must comply with rules appropriate for that network. Transmission of any materials in violation of any U.S. or state organization, or any use that would be unlawful under state or federal law is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to unauthorized use of copyrighted material, threatening, racist, harassing or obscene material, or materials protected by trade secret. Violation of district equipment without approval of the Technology Director is not acceptable. Use related to commercial activities or for commercial gain; or advertisement for purchase or sale of a product is generally not acceptable. Use for product advertisement or political use to advocate for or against a candidate, office holder, political party, or political position is also prohibited. Research or electronic communications regarding political issues or candidates shall not be a violation when the activity is to fulfill an assignment for class credit. Participating in chat rooms other than those sponsored and overseen by the District is prohibited.

2.  PRIVILEGES: The use of PISD network services is a PRIVILEGE, not a right, and inappropriate use may result in a cancellation of those privileges. The system/school administration will deem what is inappropriate action and determine consequence. Also, the system administrator may close an account or deny access at any time as required. The site administration and/or staff of PISD may request the system administrator to deny, revoke, or suspend a specific user account(s).

3.  NETIQUETTE (NETWORK ETIQUETTE): The use of an account/access requires that you abide by accepted rules of network etiquette.
