“Hiroshima Prayer of Remembrance”
On the occasion of the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, local churches are encouraged to pray and offer witness for peace in the world and the elimination of all stockpiles of nuclear weapons. Another world is possible. It must be possible. A world void of nuclear weapons with their devastating and long lasting effects on the peoples of this world, and on the earth.
A Prayer of Remembrance:
O God, tender and just,
the names of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
cut through our denial
that we are capable of destroying the earth
and all that dwell therein.
Forgive us –
and help us to always remember.
We must remember because this must never happen again.
We must remember because you would have us live
in harmony with each other,
seeing the joy of your creation in our
sisters and brothers.
Holy God, God of all the ages,
lead us from death to life, to the stockpiling of hope, and of possibilities,
and of love
rather than the stockpiling of weapons, or stones to throw, or of hate.
We pray for the healing of the earth and of its peoples,
especially for our sisters and brothers
upon whom a nuclear rain poured down.
Help us to imagine that another world is possible
and guide our actions towards the peace
you envision, the peace you have already given us.
In the name of the One who came so that we might have life,
and have it abundantly, we pray.
Amen.

Loss of Former Members
It is with sadness to report the passing of a former member of St. John’s UCC, Wilma Mesecke. Mrs. Mesecke passed away on August 1 at the age of 94, and will have a graveside service on Friday, August 7 at 10:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. A visitation will be held Thursday, August 6 from 5-8 p.m. in the Stateroom at Davis Greenlawn Funeral Home.
The church office has been notified by one of our members that many of you may remember Ava and Elliott Koehn who were members of St. John's for many years before they moved to Weimar. This is just to let the congregation know that Ava passed away Saturday afternoon. Her memorial service will be Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the UCC church in Weimar.
Please keep both of these families in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time of loss.
August Food Drive for Helping Hands
August is once again one of our months to host a food drive to benefit our local Helping Hands. A wooden crate has been placed in the Narthex so that you are able to drop off any non-perishable food items. Thanks in advance for your support.
Women’s Luncheon
The ladies of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rosenberg invite the women of St. John’s to a salad luncheon, silent auction and program on Saturday, August 8th at 11:00 a.m. The program is based on “Famous Women of the Bible” and will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church (1208 Fifth Street). Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit Krause Children’s Center in Katy and Restoration House in Victoria. To make your reservation please contact Joyce at 281-341-7500.
Kroger’s Reenrollment
Soon we will begin relinking Kroger’s courtesy cards to the St. John’s Brotherhood account for the Kroger’s Community Rewards Program. August is also a great time for new members to join this program as well. You can actually enroll in this program at any time throughout the year. Remember that this is a great way to have a percentage of your groceries total sent to the Brotherhood to be used for various projects benefiting the church.
Women’s Retreat
The ladies of the church are invited to the Women’s Retreat on September 11-13 at Slumber Falls in New Braunfels. The theme for the retreat will be “Fruits of the Spirit” and will be hosted by Immanuel UCC of Needville and Friedens UCC of Beasley. Registration can be done online at www.slumberfalls.org. For more information please contact Debby Wendt at or Erna Thielemann at or by calling Erna at 281-232-6321.
