Paint - This workshop is not as specific to colors or types of colors. You need to have a set of paints and the basics are as follows.

1 set of winsor newton, grumbacher , maimeri, holbein, or any other quality brand found in an art supply store. Student grade is ok with me. A pre packaged set is also ok .

If you are to purchase new tubes bought individually, please select at least 2 of each of the following

notice the temperature of the color. That means warm or cool.

You must refer to the visual charts at the store

notice the transparency of the color- it is on the chart and label. Some are opaque or grainy while others are transparent. It is good to have one of each in the primaries. I believe six colors can do most everything! I have underlined the ones currently on my teaching palette

2 yellows – - cadmium yellow light lemon yellow cadmium lemon new gamboges quinacradone gold- often has a various designer name

I also like naples yellow as a very opaque pigment as an extra. Right now my palette has cadmium yellow medium, quinacradone gold and naples yellow

2 reds alizarin crimson permanent , permanent, rose thalo red, for a true red I think winsor red is closest, cadmium red medium or deep – different brands sometimes have different names- ie cherry red

3 blues cobalt blue ultramarine blue pthalocyanine blue (thalo)

I also like Indigo , prussian

earth colors raw sienna yellow ochre burnt sienna burnt umber

other optional - paynes grey viridian green a purple

the goal is to learn the properties of a few before adding to your palette

most students have much more on the palette than they need

Brushes

3 round: #8 #10 #12 of a good quality synthetic. you may add a #16 or #18

also 1” or 1 1/2” flat glazing brush I prefer the longer bristles

Texas art has a new faux (“imitation) squirrel brush that has large sizes at a very reasonable cost. I have not checked Art supply lately but they are great at knowing their supplies.

Paper. Any good 100% rag, 140 lb paper is good. Arches, Waterford saunders, fabriano

Kilamanjaro ( cheap joe’s brand). ½ sheet at 15x22 or quarter sheet 11x15 are preferable for work in a short workshop. If you prefer a block, 16 x 20 or 11 x 14 is a good size. You should have a smaller pad (8x10?)of lesser much cheaper watercolor paper
