In the ten yearssince we openedourdoorsasNorthCarolina’sprotection and advocacysystemfor people with disabilities,DisabilityRightsNorthCarolinahasbecome aleadingvoicein protectingthe legalrightsofpeople withdisabilities inourState.Wearethe onlynonprofitorganization inourStatededicatedsolelytoprovidingadvocacyand legalservicestopeoplewith alltypesofdisabilitiestoprotecttheirrightto live independentlywith dignity inthecommunitiesoftheirchoice.Our mission istoprotectthelegalrights ofpeople withdisabilitiesthroughindividualand systemsadvocacy.Our18staffattorneysandattorneymanagersconduct a widerangeoflegaladvocacyservicesforpeoplewithdisabilities,includingtheprovisionofdirectlegalrepresentationtopeoplewith disabilitiestoprotecttheirrightsandensuretheyreceivetheservicestowhichtheyareentitledbylaw, bringingimpactlitigation,and actingasamicuscuriaeindisability-relatedcases.

Throughfundingfromaprivatefoundation,Disability RightsNorthCarolina willhire aDisabilityLawFellowtobegin employmentinAugust2018.TheFellowshipwascreatedin 2015toincreaseopportunitiesforattorneystodeveloptheirinterest andexpertiseinprotectingthelegal rightsofpeople withdisabilities.TheDisabilityLawFellowwillbeanattorneywith0-3yearsofexperience whohasdemonstratedaninterestin andcommitmenttopublicinterest lawandprotectingtherights ofpeople withdisabilities. The fellow will be working with our Community Access Team, which advocates for equal access in employment, higher education, public programs and services, and public accommodations.

TobeeligiblefortheDisability LawFellowship,theindividual musteitherbelicensedtopractice lawinNorthCarolina or beeligibletositfortheNorthCarolina Bar examandcommittodoso attheearliestopportunity.TheDisabilityLawFellowwillbea fulltimeemployeeofDisabilityRightsNorthCarolina,will bepaidconsistent withthesalaryrangeforitsstaffattorneys(oncelicensedtopractice lawinNorthCarolina),and willreceive allbenefitsprovidedtoitsfulltime employees.OnepersonmayholdtheDisabilityLawFellowshipfornomorethan24months.
