How to support a friend who has been sexually assaulted or raped
Ensure safety
Try to make sure the environment is calm and safe. This might mean you need to ask people to leave or turn music off. Limit stimulation.
Ask student for permission to help or if they prefer another person be contacted.
Encourage student to seek medical care—injuries are not always obvious and some services are time sensitive.
Remind student that going to the hospital or seeking medical care doesn’t mean they have to report to police. Student has options on reporting and can refuse to make a report.
Ask the student not to shower, clean or change clothes before making a decision about a physical examination or rape kit. Clothes can be placed in paper bag and taken to hospital.
Inform student that you will be private with this information, but will inform Resident Coordinator or people that might be able to improve safety in the community. You don’t need to provide names, but letting campus police or residence life know a rape has occurred on our campus can help ensure safety for all students.
Students can seek confidential medical care (STI testing, Plan B and anti-viral) at the Queens Health and Wellness Centerduring office hours.
Assist student in finding transportation and support if they want to go to the Emergency room.
Inform the student that the emergency room can provide the following assistance:
- ER can address any surgical needs immediately
- ER can provide preventative care related to possible pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Infection.
- ER can collect evidence for prosecution (Rape Kit)
- ER can call crisis counselors –United Family Services Victim Assistance(704) 375-9900
The student can seek support and counseling from Health and Wellness Center counselors on campus during office hours.
HWC is bound by both federal & state laws regarding confidentiality.
