Summary of proposal
To place a caution sign and or a rail barrier outside of the snack bar entrance closest to the cross walk leading to the east close.
1. General topic. I would like the committee to consider the following topic:
The need for additional safety measures in areas where drivers from off campus pass areas where students cross an on campus street.
2. Rationale:
Recently Steve Fox expressed a concern that some drivers, including new contracted workmen unfamiliar with Perkins, drive at an excessively high speed past the snack bar. This does not happen often but it presents a risk, especially since students occasionally leave the snack bar and cross the street impulsively.
3. Specific areas of focus. I think the following points are important:
Not all drivers are sufficiently aware of the risk.
Some drivers speed.
Not all students have learned to cross the street safely.
Sometimes students run across the street or cross the street without looking, listening, or pausing to be seen.
4. Some of the ways to resolve the issue might be:
· Place a sign cautioning drivers that deaf-blind students use the cross walk.
· Place a barrier such as a rail from the snack bar entrance to the cross walk to allow drivers additional time to see a student leaving that entrance before they cross the street.
Committee Action:
Committee response: Following a discussion about the intersection near the snack bar, the committee was in agreement that this is an unsafe crossing, and are proposing that stop signs be placed on either side of the cross walk. We also identified other traffic issues and trouble spots on campus. We feel that the mobility department needs to be consulted as to how to make the campus a safer place for our students to learn and develop independent travel skills. Although we resolved this particular safety issue, we put traffic safety on the Perkins campus as an agenda item for next meeting.
Feedback for staff who submitted the proposal: Steve will talk directly to Joe D’Ottavio and share the committees request to have stop signs put up to help alleviate the immediate concern.
