Mrs. Masloski’sNovember Newsletter

Reading: We will be doing non-fiction research on families this month. In Fiction stories, we willpractice making inferences (draw a conclusion using evidence from the story) and predictions about what might happen next. In addition, we have been doing a lot with visualizing to help us comprehend what we are reading. In small reading groups, we are focusing on using pictures, word wall words and the first sound to help us read.

Writing: We are getting really good at stretching out our words and hearing not just beginning and ending sounds but also some middle sounds. We will begin to focus on CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant) using sound boxes. Soon we will learn our first editing technique called “Dot and Say” where we put a dot under each word in our sentence as we read it to be sure it makes sense. In handwriting we will continue to practice lowercase letters.

Phonics: We now have about 15words on our word wall that students are learning to read and write. This is really helping with our reading and writing progress. We will focus more on vowels and learn that all words need at least one vowel. We will learn the many sounds vowels can make.

Math: We will focus on using ten frames, dot patterns, and finger flashes to represent the numbers 1-10. We will also practice one more and one less than a number and the concepts of more and less.

Theme: We will be discussing families and traditions. We will also focus a lot on Jackson pride and social skills as we enter the holiday season and students become a little more excited!
