WELCOME BACK!
It's great to see everyone returning this fall. Please read these issues of the Geology Newsletter carefully. They often contain information about scholarships, internships and research grants that you should take full advantage of. It also contains lots of other important dates and useful information. AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGISTS (AAPG)
Advancing the World of Petroleum Geosciences (AAPG) Student Chapter Informational Meeting on Thursday, September 17st at roughly 5:45p.m. (following after Geology Club) in Room 217.
The Student Chapter Program of AAPG is made up of collegiate groups of geoscience students that promote students to network, engage, and talk about the geological sciences with an emphasis upon the exploration of petroleum. It is one of the world's foremost co-educational programs within the geoscience sector with over 300 chapters. This program will not only be a nice addition to your resume, but it can also provide various opportunities to enhance your geologic knowledge. Such opportunities include geological career fairs, annual meetings, and sponsored speakers. Speakers typically present a technical talk on many topics specific to petroleum geology and the geosciences including Environmental Geology, Energy Mineral. Hydrogeology, Oil and Gas, Unconventional Resources, Climate Change, to name a few. Despite AAPG’s continual success in benefitting students worldwide, not one university in the state of Wisconsin has an active Student Chapter Program. Therefore, let’s get an AAPG Student Chapter Program started here in Oshkosh! To learn more, stick around after the Geology Club Meeting, which will be held on September 17th.

GEOLOGY CLUB!
Do you want to hang out with awesome fellow geology majors, go on adventures, and meet professionals in a variety of geology fields?The Geology Club supports fun activities that happen at Harrington. We meet most Thursdays in Harrington 217 at4:10pm.We have visiting professorsand professional geologistsgive talks about their research.Membership meetings also occur a few times each semester. Membership dues are $5 per year.New majors, feel free to drop by the lounge (H118) to talk with club officers or old majors for more info.

QUARRY QUEST, SEPTEMBER 12, 2015, 9AM-4PM
Quarry Quest has become one of the most fun and popular family events in Wisconsin. This exciting family outing and fundraiser is held at Michels Materials limestone quarry on Tullar Road in Neenah, Wisconsin. The event provides an opportunity to educate attendees about the mining and construction industries, all while raising money for children’s charities and Environmental Education Fund throughout the community. OSHKOSH EARTH SCIENCE CLUB 43rd ANNUAL GEM AND MINERAL SHOW
When: Saturday, Sept. 26, 9am- 5pm and Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015, 10am - 4pm

EARTH SCIENCE WEEK (ESW) OCTOBER 11-17, 2015
“Visualizing Earth Systems.”the theme of Earth Science Week 2015, explores what it means to see our planet through eyes informed by the geosciences. Using technologies ranging from on-site data collection to satellite-based remote sensing, scientists investigate conditions of Earth systems. And today’s geoscientists display their findings in charts, graphs, diagrams, illustrations, photos, videos, computer-generated animations, and 3D-printed creations.

2015 GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA (GSA) ANNUAL MEETING &EXPOSITION
The GSA Annual Meeting will be held November 1-4, 2015 in Baltimore, Maryland. The Geological Society's growing membership unites thousands of earth scientists from every corner of the globe in a common purpose to study the mysteries of our planet and share scientific findings.

DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY - LAB TEACHING ASSISTANTS, TUTORS, AND BUILDING MONITORS- FALL 2015
As you may know, the geology department hires Laboratory Teaching Assistants (T/As), Tutors and Building Monitors (Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00PM – 3PM) every semester. We have several students who have offered their assistance for these paid positions this fall, but we could use a couple more people, mainly to T/A for Environmental Geology in various time slots throughout the week.
The requirements for qualification as a T.A./Tutor are:
A. The student must be a major or a minor in the discipline to serve as a proctor in the Department's program.
B. The student must have completed at least 60 university credits with an accumulated GPA of at least 2.80. In addition, the student must have completed at least 15 credits (including core courses where applicable) toward his/her major or minor and must have at least a 3.00 grade point average in the courses offered by the major or minor department.
C. The student must have already completed the course for which he or she will proctor with at least a B grade. Alternatively, the student must have completed a higher level course covering the course material with at least a B grade.
D. Student must be able to TA and tutor all introductory geology courses: Physical Geology, Evolution of the Earth, and Environmental Geology. This means that as a TA or tutor, you will be prepared to answer questions or at least to know where to find answers in the text book or lab manual.
YOU CAN PICK UP AN APPLICATION FROM JANE IN THE GEOLOGY DEPARTMENT OFFICE, HARRINGTON 215.
NOTE: Students should visit the Financial Aid Office ASAP to find out if they are eligible for Work-Study. They are accepting applications NOW.
Funds are distributed to those who are eligible on a first come, first served basis. Students are encouraged to apply for Work-Study, as this will enable the Department to hire more students. Thank you!
