Vandals destroy Shs. 1 billion worth of power equipment

The Kenya Power & Lighting Company Ltd. (KPLC) has lost transformers, electricity conductors and other accessories worth about Shs.1 billion worth to vandalism related incidences across the country between 2004 and 2007.

This was disclosed today by the KPLC Managing Director, Eng. Joseph Njoroge, during the official launch of Kiambu KFF sub branch super league sponsored by the company at Ndumberi sports ground in Kiambu. He presented a cheque for Shs400,000 from the company.

Citing Nairobi region and its environs as the worst hit where seventy seven percent of vandalism occurs, Eng. Njoroge expressed concern that cases vandalism of electricity equipment had reached alarming proportions in recent times.

Eng. Njoroge said the Shs.1 billion loss to KPLC did not include the lost opportunities to the rest of the country occasioned by disruption of economic and social activities when electricity supply is interrupted.

He said “We in KPLC are seeking the support of residents of Kiambu and in other parts of the country to stop the vandals who are depriving all of us the use of electricity in our businesses, hospitals, schools and homes; all for their own selfish gains.”

The company has recently initiated an anti-vandalism campaign dubbed “Mulika Mwizi” to raise public awareness of the vice. Members of public have been asked to report vandals through a toll free line 0800-720001 or to the police.

Eng. Njoroge appealed to the public to use the toll free line, which is manned day and night to report vandalism related cases and urged them not to use the number for any other purpose.

The league dubbed KPLC-Kiambu KFF ‘Mulika Mwizi’ Super League comprises twenty teams from across the district are participating in the league. KFF Kiambu sub-branch has undertaken to ensure that all matches are umpired professionally, so that players can feel that they are playing in a purposeful tournament.

By sponsoring the super league, KPLC hopes that it will inculcate professionalism among players and enable them to discover and sharpen their skills and talents, and play in bigger leagues in future.
