In pursuit of the College’s Mission Statement, Student Development has two primary objectives: to strengthen partnerships throughout MassArt and the Colleges of the Fenway (COF); and to support and complement academic pursuits through the development of each student in regards to respecting diversity, cultivating creativity, promoting individuality, honoring integrity, and maintaining safety.

Our charge is twofold: to nurture the development of students as creative individuals through support services which meet their educational, personal, and social needs and to engage them in a safe, respectful, collegial, and diverse community of artists, designers, and art educators. Our inspiration and challenge is to address issues that affect a diverse student body within a multicultural city, striving for a global education.

Our efforts are driven by respect for individuals, the MassArt community and the community beyond the college. We strive to create reciprocal relationships which help empower our students to recognize and realize their potential as artists, leaders, and citizens.

The Graduate Assistant or Practicum Intern serves as a source of support for new and continuing undergraduate commuters. Students can contact the GA with questions about everything from getting involved on campus to managing time and connecting each other for off-campus housing opportunities.

PROGRAM GOALS

●Ensure that commuters feel a sense of belonging on campus;

●Provide commuters with guidance;

●Provide commuters with opportunities to meet each other; and

●Ensure that commuters are aware of relevant services on and off-campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES

●Serving as a role model and mentor to our commuter population

●Hold bi-weekly office hours so students can meet with you in person.

●Fulfill two programming hours per month, in a variety of different commuter-specific programs.

●Attend monthly bi-weekly 1-on-1 meetings with supervisor.

●Perform other duties as assigned by the Division of Student Development

●Develop and maintain Commuter Website/social media and forums

●Assist in off-campus housing roommate network

●Attend off-site community housing meetings.

●Facilitate focus groups and design surveys for “needs” assessment.

Supervision

Director of Housing & Residence Life with input from other dept. directors/coordinators

10-20 hours per week depending on GA or Practicum requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

Currently enrolled in a Graduate Program (Higher Education or Counseling)

Understanding and support of the mission of the college

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Experience with presentations and group facilitation

Commitment to co-curricular opportunities for education

Experience working with college age students

Flexibility and willingness to work both weekend and evening hours

Compensation

$750 stipend (to be paid at successful conclusion of assistantship)

Local and Regional Conference registration fee
