So and such

so and such are used for emphasis to mean to a very great degree.

Note the way they are used.

• The dentist is so gentle!

• The dentists are so gentle!

• He's so wonderfully gentle!

• He's such a wonderful dentist!

• They're such wonderful dentists!

A. Complete the sentences with so / such a / such.

Sometimes the emphatic so / such are used with that.

The dentist is so gentle …

He's so wonderfully gentle … (that) I never feel a thing.

He's such a wonderful dentist …

They're such wonderful dentists …

NOTE: that can be left out in these sentences.

The infinitive of purpose

There are various ways to indicate purpose. A simple way is to use the infinitive of

purpose.

§  Why are you here?

§  I'm here to investigate a robbery.

§  To investigate a robbery.

Here are some other ways to say something similar.

§  I'm here because I'm investigating a robbery.

§  I'm here in order to investigate a robbery.

§  I'm here so as to investigate a robbery.

§  I'm here so that I can investigate a robbery.
