The Difficult Client: Rules of Engagement
A Clinical andPersonalPerspective
Presented by Talya Lewis, BA, Peer Educator
January 11, 2018, The Cynwyd Club, 332 Trevor Lane, Bala Cynwyd PA 190045 CEU’s, $130 pp
Summary This unique workshop presents a detailed clinical andpersonalperspective on how to engage with difficult clients that often arouse anxiety and even dread in us as mental health professionals. As Talya Lewis began to come to terms with the label she once held of “difficult client,” she felt drawn to both help others who have been labeled as she was as well as those treating them. She began by initiating two support groups, one for women who have traits consistent with trauma-spectrum disorders and one for parents/caregivers to help ease their isolation and to equip them with the education necessary to cope and respond effectively to their loved one. Through her private practice working with individuals with histories of trauma, as well as her workshops, her co-authored manual, and remembering her own experiences, the realization of how painful it can be on both sides of the “couch” spurred a deep desire to educate those working in a clinical setting with these most difficult and often most traumatized individuals.
Training Objectives:
· Understand the working alliance and how it fluctuates in treatment
· Understand what triggers the difficult client’s defenses
· Understand the role of dependency as a connecting factor in treatment
· Understand the countertransference in treatment with the difficult client
· Understand the scripts of shame
· Gain some techniques to respond
