TheRollinsSchoolofPublicHealthvaluesappliedpublichealthlearningexperiences.Thepurposeofthe GlobalFieldExperienceAwardistoprovidefinancialassistancetoRSPHstudentsseekingpublichealth researchorpracticalexperiencesinlow‐resourceorhigh‐disparityglobalsettings.Toqualifyforan award, astudent’sproposedGFEmustbewell‐defined,rationalandfeasible;integraltothestudent’s publichealthtraining;ofmeasurablevaluetothehostorganization/community;andbasedina clearly articulated,mutuallybeneficialpartnership.Inadditiontoenhancingstudents’skillsandexperiences,a successfulGFEprogramcanincreasethecapacityofhostorganizations,strengthenfaculty/Emoryties withhostorganizations,contributetofacultyresearchandattractoutstandingstudentstoRSPH.

StudentsmusthaveanRSPHfacultyleadread,reviewandadviseeachproposal.Thiscouldbethe student’sdepartmentassignedfacultyadvisor,anotherfacultymemberthatconnectedthemtothe projectoranyRSPHfacultywithinterestintheprojectorexpertiseintheproposedregion,topic,or methodology(adjunctfacultyareincluded).GFEapplicantsareencouragedtodevelopproposalsand seekafacultyleadearlyin theacademicyeartoallowampletimeforfacultyconsultations,site selection,andsecuringappropriatesupportletters.TheRSPHfacultyleadmustreadandsignoffonthe finalproposalsubmittedtothecommitteetoverifythatit meetstheexpectationsforaGFE.

Studentsmustalsoworkcloselywiththeagencyandlocalcontactstoidentifya specificroletoplayin

supportoftheprojectgoalsandobjectivesinthefield.Thehostletterservestoverifythisinformation. Thisapproachallowsstudentstogaininvaluablepracticalexperiencewhilemakingimportantand tangiblecontributionstotheirhostproject’ssuccess.Thefieldexperiencemustbea minimumofsix weeksbutaveragefieldexperiencesarebetween10‐12weeks.StudentsmustbeenrolledatRSPHfor thesemesterfollowingtheirfieldexperiencetoqualifyforanaward(andtomeetawardrequirements).

StudentmustprovideproofofIRB submissionbeforefundswillbe awarded.Ifa projectdoesnotrequire IRB review(exempt),thismustbedemonstratedinwritingexplainingthejustificationbyEmoryIRB orthefacultyfieldexperienceadvisor.Forfurtherinformationonnecessaryprocedures,contacttheEmory IRBwebsiteoroffice.GFEproposalsmustalsoincludeethicalconsiderationseparatefromIRB.

AllproposalsarereviewedbytheGFEcommittee,comprisedoffacultyandstaffintheRSPHwithsignificant globalhealthexperienceandexperiencesupervisingstudentsconductingsummerfieldwork.Eachapplicationis readandevaluatedbyatleast3committeemembersusingastandardscoresheet;thereviewsarethenheardby theentirecommitteemeetinginplenaryandthecommitteemakesthefinaldecision–1)acceptwithno revisions;2)acceptwithminorrevisionstodiscusswithadvisor;3)reviseandresubmit;or4)reject.

NOTE:Proposalsareevaluatedagainstthecriterianotagainstoneanother.However,proposalsacceptedwith norevisionswillreceivehigherfundingthanthosethatrequirerevisionsandresubmission.
