Guidelines for the Graduating Class of 2017

What is the LYWLF College Scholarship?
This scholarship is designed to help graduates of the Margaret Talkington School for Young Women Leaders School afford a four-year college education.
Who funds this scholarship?
The Lubbock Young Women’s Leaders supports 100 percent of the scholarship.
How do I get this scholarship?
To be eligible to be considered for the scholarship, the student must abide by the following guidelines:
• Has a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 (weighted) as of her seventh semester of study at the
Margaret Talkington SYWL.
• Take the AP Exam for any AP course in which she is enrolled. Attend 50% of AP Review sessions offered by Talkington and/or Lubbock ISD (2017 class).
• Take the SAT or ACT by the December administration of her senior year. It is best that she take it in
the spring of her junior year and retake if necessary in the fall of the senior year.
• Has applied to two or more colleges by January 31st of the senior year.
• Apply for a minimum of 20 private scholarships prior to April 15* of her senior year. Scholarship
submissions need to be documented with the College Advisor.
• Complete and submit to the U.S. Department of Education the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA), or to the individual colleges in Texas, the Texas Application for Student Aid
(TAFSA), by December 1* of her senior year. The FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) or a postmarked
copy of the TASFA must be filed in the CollegeBound Office to confirm submission.
• Attend all Talkington College Bound workshops offered by College Advisor during Senior Year .
• Complete applications for admission to universities by March 1* of her senior year. Provide copies of all materials submitted to colleges/scholarships, including offers of admission and scholarship award, and gives them to the College Advisor.
• Complete the required cumulative community service hours per number of years enrolled at Talkington.
• Demonstrate respect toward teachers and staff at school.
• Submit completed LYWLF College Scholarship Application and supporting documentation as
outlined by the application to LYWLF College Scholarship Advisor by May 1* of senior year.
• Commit to one regionally accredited post-secondary institution by May 1st of the senior year.
• Attend mandatory post graduation LYWLF College Scholarship Meeting for parents and students
held in May/July preceding freshman year before scholarship funds can be disbursed.
*Please note that all deadline dates are enforced without exception for eligibility requirements.
The following will be taken into consideration:
• Student's discipline record
• Student attendance
• Family attendance at College Bound events and summer workshops
• Student participation in Talkington extended summer program ( if applicable)
• Student and family ability to meet all deadlines as communicated by the College Advisor
throughout the college search and admissions process in the junior and senior year
• Community Service hours
What is the award amount of the scholarship?
The scholarship amount varies and is determined by the guidelines and considerations outlined above.
Students who have attended Talkington SYWL since 9th grade will be eligible for 100% of the possible
scholarship. Students who transfer to TSYWL as 10th grade will be eligible for 75% of the possible
amount and those who transfer in the 11th will be eligible for 50% and those who transfer in the 12th grade will be eligible for 25%. If a student transfers to Talkington SWYL from another FEYW supported school, the legacy will carry over and she will be eligible for
the College Scholarship.
How long does this scholarship last?
The LYWLF College Scholarship is a one-time award that will be forwarded to the Financial Aid Office once a student has enrolled and registered for classes.
