CYSTIC FIBROSIS CHARITY DAY
We acknowledge the efforts of Graeme Crook in organisingthe recent charity day held at our club. Full greens, together with generous sponsors andbowlers raised $4,125 for the Geelong chapter for Cystic Fibrosis sufferers. The money will enable the purchase of E Flow machines which cost about $1500 to be used by Geelong children. Patients use the machines to inhale medicine they require and cuts the usage time from 20 minutes to 3 – 4 minutes. Well done on your great effortGraeme; we hope this becomes an annual event at our club.
PROBUS BOWLS DAY
On Friday 5th December we will hand over our greens to the Leopold Probus club. Around 120 “Probarians” from Ballarat, Colac, Werribee, as well as Geelong and the Bellarineregion will compete and enjoy the day.
CLUB EVENTS
Many Club Events (men’s and ladies) are well underway and entries remain open for future events.Your Yellow Fixture Book and the Notice Board provide further details. Please note that bowls attire should be worn for all club events. Markers are always in demand for Singles events. Please support the Club Events and indicate if you can play or help out on any of these occasions.
Disruptive spectators perform a "Mexican Wave" in the Corporate Box during a recent round of the Ladies Pairs.
BELLARINE SHIELD
We had three champion teams representing us in the Bellarine Shield on Sun 9th Nov and we were runners up on the day (again), with Drysdale the overall winners. We fell short by 3 miserly points, the men’s team skippered by Alan Taylor scored 7 points out of 10, the ladies skippered by Elva Muffet 6/10, and the mixed team skippered by Nicole Shortis 8/10. Well done everyone. We expectthat we will go one better next year.

Tracy and Mick Willis both lost close Semi Final matches. The gameswere played in windy and cold conditions at Inverleighon 2nd Nov. Eyewitness accounts were glowing “The spectators were entertained by a spectacular display of bowling and sportsmanship by all players”.Nicoleacknowledged their efforts in a recent blog: “Well done to both on putting yourselves out there and giving it a crack”
DUMPING OF BOWLS
Dumping of bowls has become a serious issue on our synthetic green with the manufacturers reluctant to repair damage caused in this way. Please don’t be upset if our greens staff or coaches identify your actions as suspect and request you undergo additional training to deliver your bowl correctly.
UNIFORMS & BOWLS
Please contact Margaret Peel or Mark Donehuefor uniform or bowls accessory requirements.
Rumor has it that new shower proof jackets will be in stock very shortly.
ALLEN MANN
Allen is currently in his second term as President of Deaf Lawn Bowls Australia. He recently oversaw the 5thAustralian Deaf Bowls Championship for both men’s and ladies sections held at Mareebain North Queensland. Teams have now been selected to represent Australia in the International Championships to be held in Ireland in August next year and, all being well, Allen will be there to support them.
ps: Allenis a long serving member of our club. He commenced in 2002 and has played 127 Pennant games for Leopold.
SPONSORS
Alan Taylor, as sponsor coordinator, has created a Sponsors Guide that enables prospective sponsors to compare the various sponsor and advertising packages available at our club. It is a valuable tool for attracting new sponsors and portrays our club in a professional light when we enter into discussions with local traders and potential sponsors.
When using their services, please let our sponsors know (where possible) that you are a Leopold bowler, as they enjoy feedback telling them that they are getting value from their advertising dollars, and it will assist us when we renegotiate with these sponsors. Please note our major sponsors at this time are:

LEOPOLD COMMUNITY BANK
As well as being a major sponsor, the bank has recently provided a substantial grant to our club to allow us to complete the surrounds to our synthetic bowling green.
This will enable us to
- provide improved seating around the green
- install more “hockey sticks” along the banks
These improvements should commence in the next few weeks.Whilst we will all benefit from these facilities, the primary reason for these improvements is to allow the aged, disabled and school children of our community to safely negotiate the banks on our greens so that they mayalso participate in, and enjoy the game of bowls, as well as being comfortable when not bowling.
SATURDAY PENNANT
- Team Meetings – Home Pennant team members are required to attend team meetings prior to the start of their game. These meetings are approximately 10 mins in length and commence at 11:30am. It is important that all home players attend these meetings as they are designed to discuss game plans and tactics.
- Afternoon Tea – With more and more ladies playing Saturday Pennant, the cutting of sandwiches is being left to too few. A number of Saturday bowlers have already volunteered to go on the roster so that sandwiches will remain on the menu at afternoon tea. If you are able and willing to help out please contact Margaret Peel. Your help will lighten the load on others and your shifts will be no more than once per month.
- After the match – The trial of getting together and providing a BBQ has been successful with around 60 bowlers attending each week. This will continue until further notice. We thank Barry Smallman and his crew for their continued efforts.
PENNANT REWARDS
In recognition of our high performing bowlers, at the after match functions for both midweek and Saturday Pennant, members of the biggest winning team will be rewarded with a club pen each week.
GREENS VOLUNTEERS
Terry Halliday, our Greens Director, has put out a call for more volunteers to go on the weekly “greens” roster. If you are in a position to assist please talk to Terry who will provide further details.
IF
If you can always roll the jack, right at your skipper's feet,
If you can always draw the shot, the one that must be beat.
When asked to play a 'yard on' do you judge it to perfection?
And when you're called to drive, can you always make correction?
If you can come up smiling when the other bloke,
Puts your good shot out of play and treats it as a joke.
If you're the one who saves the day, I'll say to you my son,
"You're a bloody hero, what's more the only one!"
HAPPY BIRTHDAY – LORNA
